OBITUARY

MISS MARY FERGUSON A resident of Myross Bush for 83 years, Miss Mary Ferguson died in Invercargill last week at the age of 92. Miss Ferguson came to New Zealand with her parents, Mr and Mrs Thomas Ferguson, in the sailing ship Mary and arrived in Dunedin in 1849, when she was only a year old. Her father took up land at Green Island, and after remaining there for eight years acquired a property at Myross Bush. Miss Ferguson came south in a bullock dray with her father, who drove his stock down. The rest of the family came to Invercargill by boat, disembarking near where the Bank of New Zealand now stands. There were no roads in those days, and before the family could make a trip to town from Myross Bush a track had to be prepared; it was kept in order by the settlers themselves. Miss Ferguson’s father was one of the first elders of First Presbyterian Church, Invercargill, and on Sundays the family used to walk in to church and after attending two services walk home again. On Mondays the children walked to Invercargill to attend school and remained in town until Fridays, when they would return home for the week-end.

Miss Ferguson, whose chief interest was in the farm, had five sisters and one brother. She is survived by one sister, Miss Elizabeth Ferguson, and her brother, Mr James Ferguson, both of Myross Bush, where they have always lived.
