PATRIOTIC FUND

To The Editor

Sir, —Our firm had decided to contribute a penny in the pound towards the patriotic fund until one of the staff was told that the administrator of the fund, or the one in charge, was receiving the large, unnecessarily large, salary of from £l3OO-£l6OO a year, so the rest of the staff decided that they were not going to help to keep someone in a cosy job. Surely the funds could be administered by some patriotic retired business men who would not ask remuneration for their services. I do hope you will be able to let me know whether this is true or not. I know the same thing happened in England during the last war. The public has a right to know how its money is spent.—Yours, etc., WOULD -LIKE -TO -KNOW. April 26, 1940. [An official of the Invercargill Metropolitan Patriotic Committee, to whom this letter was referred, said that in the staff collections of Id in the £1 there were no costs for administration.]
