Dane, Auckland, will arrive tomorrow to visit her daughter, Mrs Noel McGregor, Mount Linton. Mrs C. R. Story, Venlaw, arrived in Invercargill yesterday to visit her sister, Mrs A. R. Dunlop, Ramrig street. Miss H. Newlands, Winton, and Miss B. Bragg, Bluff, spent the week-end as the guests of Miss W. Rabbitte, Pukearuhe. i Miss D. Paterson, Elmwood, and Mrs A. Kinding, who have been on holiday at Lake Wanaka and Dunedin, have returned to Invercargill. The social club of Herbert, Haynes and Co., Ltd., which organized the highly successful Patriotic Ball reports that the sum of £32/18/3 was realized. Misses F. and I. McDonald, Edendale, and Miss N. McPhedran, will leave this morning for Wellington, where they will visit the Centennial Exhibition.

OBITUARY

MRS B. G. GOULTER The death occurred on April 18 at Rotorua of Mrs Barbara Grace Goulter, wife of Mr W. E. Goulter, of Rotorua, and third daughter of the late Mr and Mrs W. O. Duthie, Quarry Hills, Southland. Before her marriage, Mrs Goulter followed her fathers profession and was a teacher in the Whakarara native school. North Auckland. The death of Mrs Goulter has removed

one of the nine Duthie sisters who celebrated at Quarry Hills four years ago a reunion after a separation of 32 years. Mrs Goulter is survived by her husband and two sons and two daughters, Mi- Arthur Goulter, teacher at Rotorua, Miss Laura Goulter, nursing in the Auckland Public Hospital, Mr Donald Goulter, carpenter at Trentham, and Miss Eva Goulter, studying for her higher leaving certificate at the Rotorua High School. Mrs Goulter’s Southland sisters are Mrs H. Macintosh, Waimahaka, Mrs J. Neill, Tokanui, and Mrs N. Macintosh, Quarry Hills.

CROQUET CLUB’S MEETING

INVERCARGILL OFFICERS ELECTED The Invercargill Croquet Club held its annual meeting yesterday. The report and balance-sheet were received and approved of. Officers for the new season were elected as follows:—President, Mrs E. R. Crofts; vice-presidents, Mrs J. H. Watson and Mrs A. Wilson; joint secretary and treasurer, Mrs A. M. Macdonald and Miss M. C. Perrin; captain, Mrs J. M. Gillanders; committee, Mesdames Ronald and Farrant and Miss England; social committee, Mesdames Petrie and A. Campbell. The opening day was fixed for the first Saturday in October. After afternoon tea had been served the prizes for the season were presented as follows:—Championship, Mrs R. J. Telfer; winner of A handicap singles, Mrs J. M. Gillanders; B champion, Mrs A. Wilson; B handicap singles, Mrs T, Clow; Jennings cup, Mrs J. M. Gillanders; Mrs Tait’s trophy, Mrs J. M. Gillanders; mixed doubles, Mrs R. J. Telfer and Miss England; mixed grade match (presented by Mrs Gillanders), Mrs Cowie; mixed grade match (presented by Mrs Fraser), runner-up, Miss England.

SOCIAL EVENING AT CLIFDEN

FARMERS’ UNION HOLDS FUNCTION

On Tuesday evening last the Waiau branch of the Farmers’ Union held a social evening in the Clifden hall. Visitors were present from the Pukemaori, Eastern Bush, Tuatapere and Merrivale districts. Items were given by the following: Mr and Mrs W. Diack, jun. (musical item), Miss Iris Winsloe (recitation), Messrs J. Lawrence, P. Sim, Henderson and Ridley (songs). The chairman, Mr D. H. O’Brien, expressed pleasure at having present Mrs Orr (Balfour), president of the Southland executive of the Women’s Division, and Mr E. A. Cameron, president of the Southland executive of the Farmers’ Union.

Mrs Orr spoke of the aims of the division and of what it had accomplished for the women of New Zealand.

Mr Cameron gave an outline of the history of the Farmers’ Union Other speakers were Mr Stevens (Balfour) and Mr E. K. Sim (Pukemaori).
