LEARNTO-SWIM CAMPAIGN
LARGE ATTENDANCE AT BATHS The learn-to-swim campaign in Invercargill, which was opened in the municipal baths last night, attracted no fewer than 130 adults keen to learn to swim. Many coaches were present and the big crowd was put through the first steps of swimming thoroughly and expeditiously. Swimming officials were exceedingly pleased with the start of the campaign. They have received registrations from 160 adults keen to learn the art, and it is expected that before the season is far advanced many more registrations will have been handled. Those present last night were coached by the superintendent of the baths (Mr H. S. Baker) and 25 honorary coaches. Much good work was accomplished and it is expected by the officials that many of the learners will be well advanced in two or three lessons.
All ages from 16 to 60 were represented among the learners who were given lessons last night. It is the first time the campaign has been confined to adults and the results have shown the wisdom of the decision to confine the classes to adults.
Enthusiasm and keenness were apparent on all sides and the committee conducting the campaign feels assured of an outstanding success. The classes will be resumed tomorrow night.
