Unsettled Conditions With Kain (Special to The Times) WELLINGTON, February 19. Following is the special weather forecast for Southland issued by the Meteorological Office, Wellington:— Strong winds from a westerly quarter; weather unsettled with occasional rain. Temperatures becoming cooler; seas rough. Following is the Dominion forecast:— Weather unsettled in the western and far southern areas of the South Island, with occasional rain, but elsewhere continuing fair to fine. Temperatures, mild to warm but becoming cooler in the south. General Situation.—An anti-cyclone is centred to the north-east of New Zealand and an active depression is advancing across the South Tasman Sea. Winds.—Northerly to north-westerly predominating, moderate in the north but fresh tc strong from Taranaki southwards and reaching gale force about Cook Strait. A change to west or south-west is probable in the south tomorrow. Seas (New Zealand waters). —Rough about Cook Strait and south of Cape Egmont; elsewhere slight or moderate, but rising later in Foveaux Strait Eastern Tasman Sea.—Gradually freshening northerly winds and slight to moderate seas in the northern portion, strong winds to gales from a westerly quarter and rough seas in the southern portion. The weather in Invercargill yesterday Warm but windy weather during the day was followed by heavy rain and a cold westerly wind. The conditions were stormy late in the evening. This morning at one o’clock the weather was cold, with a strong wind, which at times reached gale force, blowing from the north-west.
