LICENCES FOR MOTOR TRANSPORT

INCREASED NUMBER IN DECEMBER Motor-vehicles licensed at December 31, 1939, numbered 307,914, an increase of 5 per cent, compared with the number licensed 12 months ago, according to the Abstract of Statistics. The figures at December 31 of the three preceding years were: 1938, 293,171; 1937, 267,257; 1936, 241,915. Private cars licensed at December 31, 1939, numbered 215,210, compared with 203,498 12 months earlier, an increase of 5.8 per cent. In spite of the increase in the number of motor-vehicles licensed, the quantity of motor spirits released from bond in December —generally a useful indicator of road usage—shows a decrease of 16.7 per cent, compared with December 1938, the figures being 8,363,000 gallons and 10,044,000 gallons respectively. The total quantity released during 1939 was 99,900,000 gallons, an increase of 3,071,000 gallons above the 1938 total, even though rationing was in operation during the greater part of September and the whole of October and November of 1939.
