BETTER PRODUCTION OF MILK
YIELDS IN AUCKLAND PROVINCE
The improvement in the production of butterfat noted this season compared with the returns for last season was continued during October, according to figures compiled by the Auckland Herd Improvement Association. In October the association tested 74,291 cows, which gave an average return of 8091 b milk and 35.11 b butterfat. In October 1938, 78,449 cows were tested, the yield a cow averaging 7501 b milk and 321 b fat. Last month’s yield, although much better than for October of last year, was much behind that of October 1937, for in that month the 92,780 cows tested produced an average of 8461 b milk and 37.21 b fat. Six groups tied for first place in the production of butterfat, the average of 391 b a cow being given by the 1717 cows in the Manawaru group, by the 747 cows in the Matatoki-Hikutaia group, by the 728 cows in the MatiereOhura group, by the 1460 cows in the Ngarua group, by the 1219 cows in the Waerenga group, and by the 838 cows in the Walton group. The average milk yield for the six groups varied from 8501 b to 9111 b. The Waerenga group produced the .best herd, the 53 cows in the herd yielding an average of 541 b fat.
