EVENING SPORTS MEETING

GOOD PERFORMANCES AT RUGBY PARK KEEN FINISHES IN MOST EVENTS Conditions were ideal for the evening sports meeting held at Rugby Park last evening under the auspices of the Southland Amateur Athletic Association. The weather was calm and mild, the track was in good order and there .was not enough wind to hinder runners. There was a fair attendance of spectators who were provided with plenty of entertainment. The finishes in most events were close and the competition was keen. The outstanding runner at the meeting was W. Robertson, the St. Paul’s Club athlete, who won the 100 yards senior handicap and the 220. yards scratch race and was second in the mile. Robertson’s running in all his events was of a uniformly high standard. Running from the seven yards mark he won the 100 yards senior handicap in the good time of 10 2-ssec. In the mile he led the field for most of the way—he ran from the 90 yard mark—but he was overtaken in the last lap by R. Dixon, the young St. Paul’s Club runner, who gave a splendid performance in winning the race by a fair margin. Three cycling events were included in the programme arid in these competition was particularly keen and the finishes were close. The Drury brothers, who are having another successful season, again distinguished themselves. A. Drury won the mile handicap and the A grade elimination race was won by O. Drury. M. Burgess won the B grade elimination race without difficulty.. . ■ • •« u The next evening meeting will be held on January 9.
