GUESTS AT FERNDALE HOUSE FAREWELL TO POPULAR RESIDENTS Recent visitors at Ferndale House include:—Mr and Mrs Hartstonge, Mr Ferguson, Mr M. Keen, Mrs and Miss Doig (Dunedin); Mr Gilanders, Mr Alex Martin and son, Mr Crombie, Mr D. Ross, Mi- and Mrs Heatherington, Mr Russell Stewart, Mr Kerr, Mr Fernandez (Invercargill); Mr and Mrs Anderson (Waimatuku); Mr Stewart (Mosgiel); Mr Craw (Alexander); Miss Morgan (U.S.A.); Mr Husband (Christchurch); Miss A. Boyd (Queenstown); Mr and Mrs Harvey (Auckland). PERSONAL Mr and Mrs J. W. Ferguson arrived by the Tamatea to spend the summer vacation at their house at Leask’s Bay. Mr A. Arthur, Invercargill, spent last week-end at the island. Recently returning from Australia, Mr and Mrs J. A. Sloane arrived by the Tamatea on Wednesday to spend the summer at their residence “Kalinya.” Mrs R. C. Hicks, Ferndale House, is spending a few days in Invercargill. Mr Cyril Hicks, Ferndale House, has returned from the Dunedin Training College. Miss Dulcie Young, has returned from spending her annual holidays in Invercargill. Mr Gilanders, Government Inspector of machinery, paid a short visit to the island during the week. Mr Kerr, Government Health Inspector, and Mr Fernandez, of the Social Security Department, are also visitors to the island this week. Mr Victor Thomson, Greenvale House, is paying a short visit to Dunedin. Miss D. Cotterill is spending a few days in Invercargill. The many friends and past visitors of Mrs F. W. Traill, Woodslea House, will regret to learn that she is seriously, ill in hospital in Invercargill. Islanders who took advantage of the excursion trip to visit the Royal Show included:—Mesdames W. D. Young, Mrs W. Hicks, Miss N. Collins, Messrs Gaspinal, R. S. Bragg, W. Oswald, H. Askerud, J. Calder, E. Hicks and J. Lockett. Mrs J. Sloan, Golden Bay, has returned from a holiday In Invercargill, Mrs Gordon Barton spent a few days in Bluff and Invercargill recently. Mrs J. Fife, sen., has also been spending a few days in Bluff and Invercargill. Mrs J. Fife, jun., and Miss W. Topi are at present spending a holiday in Invercargill. Mrs Peter Souter returns on Saturday after spending a few days on the mainland. Mrs J. Michler and her three daughters are spending the school holidays with Mr and Mrs G. Gregg, Dunedin. FAREWELL EVENING Before their departure to live in Invercargill, Mr and Mrs Edwin Harrison were entertained at a social evening in the Public Hall by the residents of the island and the members of the Returned Soldiers’ Association. They were presented with a pair of mats by Mr J. Campbell, who wished them every success in Invercargill. YACHT CLUB At the annual meeting of the Stewart Island Yacht Club the following committee ./as elected:—Patron, Mr J. A. Sloane; commodore, Mr T. Bragg; vicecommodore, Mr H. Hansen; rear commodore, Mr Rangi Bragg; secretary and treasurer, Mr W. J. Hamilton; general committee, Messrs C. Topi, J. Hamilton, R. S. Bragg, J. Hunter, W. Bailey, jun.; auditor, Mr W. Oswald; club trustees, Mr T. Bragg and Mr W. J. Hamilton. Mrs H. Hansen was elected a life member of the club in appreciation of the valuable services that she has given the club in past years. It was decided that because of the departure to the mainland of a large number of the club’s members, not to enter a challenge for the Sanders Cup contest to be held at Wellington in January. TENNIS CLUB At the annual meeting of the Rakuira Tennis Club, held recently, the following committee was elected:—President, Mr T. Bragg; vice-presidents, Messrs W. J. Hamilton and Victor Thomson; committee, Mesdames W. J. Hamilton and C. Fife, Messrs C. Fife, W. Robertson

and R. Bragg; secretary and treasurer, Mr J. Hamilton; club captains, Miss N. Fife and Mr W. Robertson; auditor, Mr W. Oswald. In spite of the fact that a large amount of money had been spent this year on repairing the courts, the balance-sheet still showed a good profit. Tourists this year would find the courts in first-class playing order. In honour of the centenary, two silver cups were presented to the club by Mrs W. J. Hamilton, for competitions among the members during the season. The official opening of the club took place and a very successful dance was held in the evening, music being supplied by Mrs G. Bragg, Mrs W. Armstrong, Miss S. Smith and Mr L. Thomson. During the evening a presentation was made on behalf of the newly-form-ed power-boat club, of the Ulva Cup. Mr I. Milne, in making the presentation, explained the objects of the new club, and congratulated Mr Roy Traill on his good seamanship. Mr Traill is the first holder of this fine cup, given by Mr Norman Jensen. Challenge races for the cup are to be held every three months. Mr Traill replied. Messrs J. Marshall and Gordon Barton also replied. CLOSING OF TEAROOMS After 20 years, the Misses Brown, of Korari tearooms, have decided to retire. Their visitors’ book shows that they have served teas to visitors from every part of the world. Their retirement is a loss to the islanders, as well as to the tourists. The Misses Brown also took a keen interest in their flower garden, which was a brilliant picture all the year round. GOOD WEATHER The weather on the island during the last few weeks has been very good and everything points to a very successful holiday season. Visitors will again this year be able to enjoy dancing to music supplied by Mr C. Dixon and his orchestra from Bluff. The gardens are looking particularly well this year but a great deal of damage is being done by the black diamond-headed grub.
