RIVERTON
PROGRESS_ LEAGUE At a meeting of the Riverton Progress League Mr Lance Raymond was chairman. Those present were: Dr _E. S. Fossey, Messrs J. A. C. Mackenzie, C. B. Matthewson, J. A. B. Walker, S. A. Odell, H. C. Johnstone, A. P. O’Callaghan, and the secretary, Mr J. Crawford. After discussion on the damage that had been done to the league’s property at the North Beach, Taramea Bay, the bay pavilion and elsewhere, it was resolved that the members of the league constitute themselves a vigilance committee for the protection of the league’s property. CARNIVAL COMMITTEE At a meeting of the Carnival Committee Mr Lance Raymond presided. Those present were: Drs E. S. Fossey and C. H. Gordon, Messrs C. B. Matthewson, J. A. Martin, A. P. O’Callaghan, D. Walsh, F. Conn, S. A. Odell and the secretary, Mr J. Crawford. It was agreed tnat the bathing beauty parade should be an open competition, the prizes to be £5, £3 and £l, or trophies equivalent to that amount, and the verdict to be by public vote and a judge’s decision in addition. It was decided that a trophy would be awarded for a waltzing competition at the dance. RED CROSS SOCIETY A meeting was held in the council chambers to consider the formation of a branch of the Red Cross Society. The Mayor (Dr N. G. Trotter) presided. It was decided to form a branch of the Red Cross Society in Riverton, but to suspend its activities until next February, by which time it was hoped that further information would be available along with further official details for the organization of the branch. Mrs H. J. Walden was elected president, Mesdames C. H. Gordon, H. Roberts and Miss A. McNaughton vicepresidents, Mrs T. Borland secretary, and Miss Borland treasurer. These with Mesdames Provan, Harvey, Wilson, Miss Price and Captain Tatton were elected a comforts committee, and it was decided to invite all the women’s organizations of the area to appoint two or more of their number to join this committee.
