WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
WAITANE The Waitane Women’s Institute celebrated its sixth birthday with a social and dance in Mr A. O. Ross’s barn at Te Tipua. The president, Mrs B. V. Ross, extended a welcome to all present and expressed the institute’s appreciation for the splendid attendance of members and visitors. She thanked Mr and Mrs B. V. Ross for the use of their barn and piano, and. then invited Mrs F. Smith (federation secretary) to light the candles and cut the cake, which had been made by Mrs B. Ross and iced by Mrs L. Ross. Associated with Mrs F. Smith were Mrs S. E. Smith (Mataura Women’s Institute), Mrs R. Hutton (Mataura Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union), Mrs Sanderson (Hedgehope Women’s Division) and Mrs Smith (Waimumu Institute), who congratulated the institute on the attainment of its sixth birthday and expressed best wishes for its future success. An apology for her absence and greetings from the Pukerau Institute were received from Mrs Kennedy (federation president). During the evening several items were given. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr and Miss Hay and a lucky spot waltz was won by Mrs T. Lewis and partner. Messrs A. O. Ross and D. Cross were masters of ceremonies.
