GORE

HIGH SCHOOL BATHS FUND £157/13/7 NOW IN HAND “The funds available for the baths have been increased from £125/12/7 to £157/13/7 during the month,” stated the report of the rector, Mr E. H. W. Rowntree) to yesterday’s meeting of the Gore High School Board of Governors. The increase was accounted for by an and onymous gift of £2, £lO from the Repertory Society, and £2O as the proceeds from the annual concert, stated the report. The Parents’,;.Association had applied for a Government subsidy of £2OO and if this was available a start should be able to be made on the erection of the pool by the end of next year. “The roll at the end of the year was 239, compared with 226 for the same period last year,” stated the report. “Thus we finish with the same number above last year as we had at the beginning of the year, and there is every reason to hope that our new grade will be maintained next year.” An innovation in the form of house competition in military and physical . drill was held during the month, the report stated. A start had been made on the new technical buildings and it was hoped that these would be ready early in the New Year. The response to the circular sent to former pupils had been pleasing and it looked as though the association would again become a strong body. A very fine cup had been presented to the school by Mr J. Hall, a former, pupil, while another former pupil, Mr R. A. Wallis, had offered to provide half the cost of a new honours board for the «s school. The chairman of the board, Mr E. C. Smith, had provided the other half.

The results of the Government typing examinations revealed th’at Mary Mallon had passed the senior examination, while Jocelyn Perry and June McDowell had passed the junior. A debate for juniors as well as seniors had been held this year. Again the school was indebted to Mr E. C. Smith for judging both debates. McNab House won the junior debate and Hunter House won the senior. During the month a special spelling contest had been held by the Gore Chamber of Commerce. Prizes had been won by Elsie McQueen and Avis McKitterick. ■ MILITARY CAMP The report stated that arrangements were in hand for the holding of a military camp for the boys during the third week in February. The report was received. Those present at the meeting were: Messrs E. C. Smith (chairman), Henry Smith, W. Bell, H. C. Mac Gibbon, Hugh Smith and F. Wallis, jun. The Gore Cricket Club wrote asking that it be granted permission to lay a concrete wicket at the south western comer of the hostel ground in a position to be approved by the board. This request was necessitated by the fact that a new building was being erected on the present pitch. “We might state in submitting this application that our club has assisted High School cricket for a number of years,” stated the letter. “The school has always been allowed the use of our mats, which are a recurring expensive item. Each season we have contributed toward the cost of cutting the grass and our presence on the ground has not made the necessity for this process any more frequent.” The chairman (Mr E. C. Smith) said that it was quite true that the club had assisted the school cricket throughout a number of years. It was also true that the club had had tl;e use of the school’s ground. He did not think there was enough ground for another pitch. “I think the time has arrived when the cricket clubs will have to look for other grounds, as we hope to have the new school before the end of next year,” said Mr Smith. “It is unfortunate because they have certainly been an asset to school cricket.” The matter was left in the hands of the chairman, Messrs F. Wallis and H. C. Mac Gibbon, and the secretary (Mr F. Young) to attend to.
