CHRISTMAS MEETING ON SATURDAY / R, BROAD SUCCESSFUL The Invercargill Gun Club’s Christmas shoot at Grassmere on Saturday attracted 30 competitors, including 10 from Balclutha. R. Broad, who is a member of the well-known Invercargill shooting family, won the first prize of £2O in the open match of 21 birds after an interesting contest in which he secured 20 breaks. G. V. Edge, of Bluff, gained second place with 19 breaks ana J. E. Dow, of Balclutha, took third money with 18 breaks, after eliminating D. Campbell, also of Balclutha, and E. Halpin. Minor prizes were keenly competed for and several had to be decided by art additional round. The weather for the shoot was ideal. The prize-winners were:—R. Broad 1 G V Edge 2, D. Campbell 3, J. E. Dow' 4, E. Halpin 5, T. Blackler 6, P. O’Callaghan 7, J. Stiven 8, G. Bonney 9, J. Broad 10, R. Thwaites 11, E. Broad 12. , , Edge and Halpin secured the most first-barrel breaks, 18. In the shootoff for the prize Edge got all his birds, Halpin missing one. E. Broad appeared the early winner. He scored eight firstbarrel breaks before he missed and then secured eight more first time. After another miss, he needed to get only the last three birds to head the field, but he missed them completely. R. Broad had six first and two second-barrel breaks before he missed. He made no mistake about the last five and broke them all with his first barrel to win outright. Edge had two misses, but he gained second place by securing the last three with his first barrel. He had only one miss in the first 17 attempts. Halpin, whose shooting was marked by unusual quickness in sighting the bird, missed only one in the first 12. Campbell had only one secondbarrel break in his score, while Thwaites and Blackler all had first attempt successes. Mr Eric Russell presented the prizes.
