POLITICIANS IN AIR FORCE.—According to a parliamentary answer, seven members of Parliament are serving in the Royal Air Force. (Rugby.) FIRE ON SHlP.— Detectives are inquiring into a fire on an overseas vessel on which 860 bales of wool were loaded last week. The ship was due to leave when the fire was discovered. Eventually it was subdued, but a second fire occurred and did extensive damage. (Brisbane.) LORD MAYOR OF SYDNEY.— Aiderman S. S. Crick has been elected Lord Mayor of Sydney in succession to Aiderman Sir Norman Nock. Aiderman Crick is a prominent business man and is closely identified with the cinema industry. (Sydney.) ROAD ACCIDENTS.— It is officially announced that 926 persons were killed in road accidents, of which 674 occurred during black-outs in November, compared with 919 in October, and 613 in November 1938. (London.) FORCES STRENGTHENED.— In a two-minute speech Signor Mussolini declared that Italy was strengthening her forces for the future. (Rome.) EXTRA PAY.— French soldiers exposed to enemy fire will receive an extra 15d daily. (Paris.) BRITISH RAILWAYS.— The first urgent emergency demands on transport facilities and the incidence of Air Raid Precautions Regulations involved the British railways in inevitable dislocation j- certain services, but rapid progress is being made in restoring them to normal functioning, one by one. (Rugby.) GIFT OF CIGARETTES.— Lord Nuffield has placed an order for 1,500,000 woodbine cigarettes for distribution among the men serving in the Army and the Air Force in France and on board British vessels at sea.—(Rugby.) RED CROSS UNIT.— The Australian Red Cross Society has decided to send a Red Cross unit overseas to distribute comforts among members of the Second Australian Imperial Force.— (Sydney.)
