GERMAN CRUISER SUNK
EXPLOIT OF SUBMARINE
SHIP TORPEDOED NEAR ELBE 6000 TON VESSEL OF KOLN CLASS ESCORT OF DESTROYERS PRESENT (By Radio —1.15 a.m.) LONDON, December 18. Barely two hours after the scuttling of the Admiral Graf Spee off Montevideo came the news of the destruction of another German warship by a British submarine. The name of the warship has not been announced but it is known that she was a 6000-ton cruiser of the Koln class. The cruiser was torpedoed by the British submarine Ursula near the mouth of the Elbe and at the time she was screened by six German destroyers. This attack was in no way connected with the attack on a cruiser last Thursday by the submarine which sighted the Bremen. Germany has three cruisers of the Koln class, the Karlsruhe, the Koln and the Konigsberg. Of 6000 tons and 570 feet long, they were completed in 1929. They are armed with ninfe 5.9 inch guns, 12 to 14 anti-aircraft guns and 12 triple deck torpedo tubes. They have a speed of 32 knots and carry a complement of 570.
