MOTORIST SENT TO PRISON

INTOXICATED WHILE IN CHARGE OF CAR GOVERNMENT PROPERTY DAMAGED James Oliver Newton, of Invercargill, a sheet-metal worker, was charged at Bluff before Mr R. C. Abernethy, S.M., yesterday with being intoxicated while in charge of a motor-vehicle and damaging Government property. He pleaded guilty. Constable A. Crombie said that he noticed the accused’s car swerving on the Invercargill-Bluff highway near Ocean Beach at 4 p.m. on Saturday. The accused said the swerving was caused by his having to bend down and fix some part of the car. The accused was sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment. He was also ordered to pay damages amounting to £l/15/and expenses 12/6, and his licence was cancelled for one year.
