SENIOR CRICKET GAMES

MATCHES PLAYED ON SATURDAY Good Batting By L. Barnett OTHER PERFORMANCES MEDIOCRE OLD BOYS, APPLEBY AND INVERCARGILL WIN Senior cricket matches were continued in Invercargill on Saturday in fine weather and on good wickets. Playing at High School Old Boys secured a four-point win from Bluff which put up an excellent performance in its second innings. Appleby beat Union on the Appleby ground by six wickets-a four-point win—and at the Marist ground Invercargill secured a two-point win over Marist on the first innings. BEST PERFORMANCES Batting L. NARROW WIN FOR INVERCARGILL DETERMINED EFFORT BY MARIST The match between Marist and Invercargill on the Marist ground was an interesting one in which the issue hung in doubt almost to the very end, Invercargill ultimately winning on the first innings. On the first day’s play Invercargill made 163 and Marist 97, and when play was resumed on Saturday Invercargill’s second innings closed for 129, making a total of 292. Marist therefor wanted 196 more runs for a win, while Invercargill for a four-point win had to dismiss the whole side for less than 195. Marist almost succeeded in snatching victory for defeat, making 190 runs and managed also to stave off a four-point win by one wicket. McGibbon’s 43 for Invercargill was a bright effort containing five fours, and useful contributions were also made by Oliver and Mackrell, both of whom have been batting well lately. McGowan was on top of his bowling form and took five Invercargill wickets for 40 runs.

The Marist batsmen got going well and made a splendid effort, until near the end, when the tail-enders failed to maintain the standard, N. Forde put up what was probably the best performance of his batting career in senior cricket so far with 51 runs, and Collins also batted well for 48 not out. H. Fraser and T. McKenzie carried the burden of the bowling for Invercargill, "raser being fairly successful with six wickets for 64. Details:— INVERCARGILL y First Innings 163 Second Innings C. K. BLUFF BEATEN BY OLD BOYS FINE STAND BY PORT TEAM Old Boys beat Bluff on the High School ground on the first innings, after a magnificent second innings stand by the Bluff team which produced 200 runs. In its first innings Bluff had made 121 to Old Boys’ 235, and when play was resumed Bluff went in again to bat. L. Barnett, who came in after the first wicket fell, attacked the bowling from the beginning, and survived the innings with 87 runs which included four sixes and eight fours. The third wicket partnership between Barnett and Nixey produced 58 runs, of which Nixey contributed 36. Three wickets fell for 18 in Old Boys’ second innings and for a while it looked as if the team might go out very cheaply but 41 by Scandrett consolidated Old Boys’ position and the game ended at 4.42 with the required number of runs for a win. WEBB (United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, December 16. A surprise in the selection of the Plunket Shield team to represent Canterbury against Otago at Christchurch next Saturday is that of R. C. Webb, a solicitor who was drafted to the Ngaruawahia camp as a soldier of the special force. As a wicket-keeper, Webb, who is still in his early twenties, played for Canterbury in Shield games last season and the season before, taking the place vacated by C. K. Jackman, when he went to Auckland on transfer. A sound bat as well as an alert and reilable wicket-keeper, Webb had a club average last season of 36.71. In Plunket Shield games his top score was 40 against Otago. The team to play Otago is: J. L. Kerr (West Christchurch), R. E. J. Menzies (Old Boys), M. P. Donnelly (West Christchurch), W. McD. Anderson (Old Boys), F. P. O’Brien (St. Albans), W. A. Hadlee Old Boys), H. Davis (East Christchurch), I. B. Cromb (Lancaster Park), A. W. Roberts (Riccarton), D. N. Mcßae (Lancaster Park), R. C. Webb (St. Albans).

V. James (East Christchurch) is twelfth man. This team, when the Otago match is concluded, will travel to the North Island with the exception that B. C. Harbidge (Old Boys), replaces Webb against Wellington.
