HIGHLAND DANCING DISPLAY

GOOD ATTENDANCE AT OUTDOOR FUNCTION

A programme of Highland dancing was presented by the pupils of the Academy of Highland Dancing and their friends at the residence of Misses Todd, “Belgravia,” North road, on Saturday afternoon. There was a big attendance and the weather was perfect. The following is a list of the chief events:

Highland Fling, over 10 years (novice); eight entries—Alice Smith 1, Robert Waldren 2, Heather Buchanan and Doris Miller h.c. Highland Fling (novice); eight to 10 years; 12 entries— Jocelyn Buchanan 1, Jean Erskine 2, Colleen McKay and Correen McLean h.c. Highland Fling, under eight years (novice); six entries —Kathleen Eunson 1, Margaret Edmondsten 2, John Erskine and Betty Duncan h.c. Sword Dance, 11 to 13 years (novice) ; six entries-—Robert Waldren 1, Heather Buchanan 2, Ailsa Gibbon 3, Ruth Graeve h.c. Waldren h.c. A special item, Sailor’s Hornpipe in costume, was danced by Miss Betty Wilson. Among the representative visitors were Chief J. L. McG. Watson (St. Andrew’s Scottish Society), Mr T. M. Rankin (president of the Southland Centre of the Dancing and Piping Association of New Zealand) and others from different parts of the province. After afternoon tea had been served on the lawn the trophies for the various competitions were presented.
