City Guards Defence Club RANKIN CUP WON BY J. B. DOAKE The City Guards Defence Rifle Club fired the final stage of the Rankin Cup and the first stage of the Whitcombe and Caldwell Cup competitions at Otatara on Saturday afternoon, seven shots being fired at 300, 500 and 600 yards. The conditions were good and the marksmanship was of a high standard, excellent scores being registered. At 300 yards J. W. Doake headed the list with 5555455—34. B. Bromfield 33, and J. Brydon 33, filled the next two places counting out J. Tansley, B. Walker, L. Sproat, J. B. Doake and R. W. Henderson all with 33. B. Broomfield and J. Tansley with the possible 5555555—35, were top at 500 yards, the next being A. Ford with 34, counting out J. B. Doake, J. W. Doake and C. Mathieson. At 600 yards J. B. Doake and W. McChesney headed the list with the possible 5555555—35, J. Tansley with a five-bull finish (34) counting out Mrs J. B. Doake and R. W. Henderson for third place. The highest aggregate for the day was obtained by J. B. Doake and J. Tansley, with the fine score of 102 out of the possible 105. ' Doake with 33, 34, 35 counted out Tansley’s 33, 35, 34. R. W. Henderson with 33, 33—34 —100 was third. The finish for the Rankin Cup was close and exciting, five members reaching the handicap limit of 204 for the six ranges. J. B. Doake used only one point of his handicap, with a “possible” finish at the last range, counting out Tansley, who made 34 and narrowly missed the possible with a close 4 for his second shot. Doake’s score of 101, 102—203 off the rifle, was a fine effort for a handicap man. Tansley’s score of 102, 102—204 out of the possible 210 was a brilliant effort from scratch and establishes a new record for Southland for two consecutive shoots in one competition. INVERCARGILL CLUB BEST AGGREGATE BY POMEROY The competition for the Walter Cunningham Memorial Cup was fired on Saturday by the InVercargill Defence Rifle Club in good weather. The scoring was of a high standard, only three of the 18 competitors failing to reach 90 out of the possible 105. At 300 yards A. R. Wills headed the list with the possible 5555555—35. J. Archer also shot well for 34. At 500 yards W. Milley was top also with the possible 5555555—35. A. Pomeroy, J. Clark, G. Wilson, N. McWilliams and F. Mayhew made 34 each. At 600 yards J. Reeves shot well to top the list with the possible 5555555—35, which was . a fine performance at this range. A. Pomeroy and F. G. Henderson also shot well for 34 each. The best aggregate was made by A. Pomeroy with 100 after counting out W. Milley, who also made 100. Mayhew, Clark, Archer and Wills made 99 each. Pomeroy was winner of the cup. In last week’s match for the Smith Cup, the winner was F. G. Henderson. Both cups were handicap matches. The first competition for the club championship will be fired next Saturday.
