Motor Smash Near ■ Nightcaps CARS IN HEAD-ON COLLISION Two Men In Serious Condition Four men and a woman were injured when two motor-cars met in a head-on collision on the Nightcaps-Wairio road about midnight on Saturday. They were admitted to the Southland Hospital early yesterday morning. Two of the men suffered spinal injuries and last night their condition was stated to be critical. The names of the injured persons are: JAMES HOGAN, 157 Teviot street, Invercargill; aged 27; spinal injuries; dangerously ill. BERNARD HOGAN, brother of James Hogan; aged 25; chest injuries; condition satisfactory. JAMES KELLY, Barm street, Bluff; aged 25; spinal injuries; seriously ill. RICHARD ROBERTSON, 244 Tweed street, Invercargill; aged 25; facial injuries; condition satisfactory. HILDA FORD, Wairio; aged 24; nose injury; condition satisfactory. Both cars were extensively damaged in the collision, one, it is stated, being beyond repair. The four men were in one car and Miss Ford and Thomas Luke, a miner, of Ohai, were in the other. Luke, the driver of the latter car, suffered rib injuries but was not sent to hospital. DEATH FROM INJURIES AT WELLINGTON CYCLIST COLLIDES WITH BUS (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 2. Injuries so severe that he died before the ambulance taking him to hospital could reach its destination, were received by William Swiffin, aged 58, a married man, of Island Bay, in an accident not far from his home at one p.m. on Saturday. While riding a bicycle he collided with a bus at an intersection’ and received severe head injuries and fractured ribs. MOTORCYCKE. AND CAR COLLIDE YOUTH SUFFERS FATAL INJURIES (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 3. Fatal injuries were suffered by a motor-cyclist when his machine collided with a motor-car on the Waipipi road. He was Harry Stanley Cowley, aged .19, whose parents reside at Tuakau. The youth, who was in the employ of Mr D. Hamilton, a farmer of Waipipi, was returning to Mr Hamilton’s farm from Waiuku when the collision occurred. It took place on a bend. The car was being driven to Waiuku by D. Douglas, a farmer of Kohekohe. The cyclist was thrown to the road and his machine piled up on the front of the car. He suffered a fracture of the skull and was unconscious when picked up. CONSTABLE INJURED AT EXHIBITION (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 2. Rather severe injuries were received by Constable C. Rousel, of the police staff at the Exhibition shortly before 1 o’clock, when he was struck by a motor-car going to one of the sideshows. He was able to go to the ambulance depot, where it was found he suffered from deep cuts in the buttocks and abrasions to his legs, arms and hands and shock.
