N.Z. PILOTS FOR OVERSEAS
First Draft Leaves
Soon ANNOUNCEMENT MADE BY MR JONES (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 2. The imminent departure from New Zealand of the first draft of the Air Force to go overseas since the outbreak of war was announced today by the Minister of Defence (the Hon. F. Jones). The draft will contain pilots who have completed their air training and have gained their “wings” at Wigram. Upon their arrival in England they will serve with the Royal Air Force. They are at present on leave before their departure in the next few days. Mr Jones expressed regret that, for obvious reasons, it was not possible to mark the actual departure of the men by a suitable ceremony. Although the draft was a small one it was of special ■Significance because they would be the first draft of New Zealanders to leave for overseas service, since the war began. The draft will include three Wellington men, one of whom is a son of Major-General J. E. Duigan, Chief of the General Staff. Others are Mr C. A. Pownall and Mr R. C. F. Scott.
