MATAURA

AMENITIES SOCIETY MEETS SUCCESSFUL YEAR’S WORKING The annual meeting of the Mataura Amenities Society was presided over by the president, Mr A. Gourley. There was a fair attendance of members. | “The executive wishes to record a successful year’s working,” stated the annual report. “Twelve meetings were held during the year and these were fairly well attended. “In conjunction with the Mataura Borough Council the society has accomplished a good deal of work and during the coming year it is hoped to accomplish still more. The sowing down of the plot at the entrance to the Domain grounds, and the building of rock gardens at the entrances to the new bridge gives the society ample scope for its efforts to improve the appearance of the town, and we invite the citizens of Mataura to assist us by donations of suitable shrubs and plants. “During the past year the executive made a definite effort to raise funds for the erection of swings, sandpits and so on in the children’s playing areas in Kana and Main streets. We asked for donations from various firms and met with a ready response, the result being that the children’s playground account shows a credit balance of £33/3/-. “We regret to report the loss of two of our enthusiastic members in Messrs J. J. Griffiths and J. H. Y. Clark, who have left the district.” In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, the president said that he thought that the year’s working had proved that the society was a live body, and justified its existence.
