Mrs W. J. Jones, Herbert street, returned yesterday from a holiday in Timaru and Oamaru. Mr and Mrs J. D. Pigou will arrive in Invercargill at the week-end and will take up residence in Albert street. Mrs E. C. Giller and Miss Anne Giller, Mossbum, have been visiting friends in Invercargill . ' Miss E. O’Byrne, Dalrymple street, who is visiting Timaru, will return next week-end. Mrs D. H. Jennings, who has been the guest of Mrs David Jennings, Yarrow street, will return to Christchurch on Monday. The friends of Mrs H. Acton, formerly of Lowe street, will be pleased to hear that she is recovering from an operation in the Christchurch hospital. Mrs J. D. Gilmore was elected chairman of the Music Circle, and Mrs Stanley Brown chairman of the Civics

Circle, at meetings of the respective circles at the Women’s Club yesterday afternoon. Miss Eleanor Turnbull (Sumner) passed the Conjoint Examination of the Chartered Society of Massage and Medical Gymnastics last June, coming top of all-England. Miss Turnbull is now -doing a course of Light and Medical Electricity at Guy’s Hospital Massage School, which has opened temporarily at the Public Assistance Institution in Orpington, Kent.

WEDDINGS

BOND—ROWLEY At the Cathedral of St. Mary and St. John at Manila, the wedding was recently solemnized of Alison, only daughter of Mr and Mrs Spencer Rowley and John Francis, only son of S. H. Bond, of Preston, England. The Rt. Rev. G. F. Mosher, Bishop of the Philippines performed the ceremony. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a gown of white duchess satin fashioned on princess lines, featuring a sweetheart neckline a long, sweeping train and long sleeves. Her finger-tip-length bridal veil fell from a scalloped tiara of seed pearls. She carried a large bouquet of lilies tied with a white satin bow. _ The long train was carried by two little pages Robin Bryan and Anthony Watty, who wore white satin suits. Miss Barbara Clear, who was maid ot honour, wore turquoise lace and carried pink gladioli, the same flowers fashioning her doll hat. The two little flower girls, Heather Watty and Philippa Kemot wore long frocks of blue organdy with tucked bodices. They carried old-fashioned bouquets of pink gladioli and wore tiny pink flower wreaths in their hair. Immediately after the ceremony a reception. was held at the home of the bride’s parents in New Manila. Mrs Rowley wore a gown of claret chiffon and beige lace and wore a widebrimmed hat to match. Mr and Mrs John Bond will make their home in Manila. WATT—SMALL The wedding took place at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church on November 14, of Dulcie, younger daughter of Mr and Mrs Thomas Small, Lumsden, to James Alexander, eldest son of Mr and Mrs James Watt, Toa. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. C. J. Tocker. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a gown of white lace over satin. The V-neck was finished with a spray of orange blossom, and the sleeves were puffed to the elbow and tight-fitting to the wrist, and trimmed with satin buttons. The full skirt, which was shirred at the back, fell to form a train. Her embroidered tulle veil, which was arranged off the face with a halo of orange blossom, came from England and was lent by a friend.. She carried a sheaf of arum lilies. Mrs L. Keith, sister of the bride, was matron of honour. She wore a frock of old gold lace over satin. The neckline was V-shaped at the back and cowled in front, finishing with a posy of flowers. She carried a sheaf of ranunculi, tulips and maidenhair fern. The best man was. Mr Ivan Watt, brother of the bridegroom. . _ , The reception was held in Smith’s Lounge, where the guests were received by Mrs Small, assisted by Mrs Watt. The bride’s mother wore a London tan costume with accessories to match, and a spray of rust abutilons. The bridegroom’s mother wore a navy ensemble and navy accessories. Her spray was of lemon ranunculi. For travelling the bride wore a navy costume with hat and shoes to match, and carried a navy bag, the gift of the bridegroom. Mr and Mrs James Watt will make their home in Balclutha. Before her marriage the bride was entertained by friends in Lumsden at a kitchen evening.

COMING-OF-AGE CELEBRATED

MISS T. KEMP HONOURED A social evening was spent recently in Everybody’s Hall, Tay street, to celebrate the coming-of-age of Theresa, eldest daughter of Mr arid Mrs K. Kemp, Gorge Road. The evening was spent in dancing and extras were played by M. Roughan, H. Miller and B. Kemp. A solo was sung by Mr R. King. Mr K. Kemp and Mr M. Eade were masters of ceremonies. Mr and Mrs Lester Moller, Avenal Flats, Dee street, left yesterday to spend the week-end in Dunedin. Mr and Mrs H. C. Date, Albert street, will go to the Grand Hotel on Tuesday and will leave by car for the north on Wednesday. Members of the Southland Travel Club will meet in H. and J. Smith’s tea-rooms on Monday at 3 o’clock, when Mrs R. N. Todd will speak on her recent trip abroad. Mrs W. D. Palmer, who has been .'hostess at the Tudor Tea Rooms for the last four years, is severing her connection with Herbert, Haynes and Co. at the end of the year. Miss Jean Anderson, of Christchurch, has won the Violet Ward prize for the second time. It is given annually for the most promising piano candidate in the examinations conducted by the Royal Schools of Music, London. Miss N. Enderby, head mistress of St. John’s Girls’ School, will leave for England early in the New Year. She will visit relations there and hopes to see something of recent educational methods—in spite of war conditions—before returning to the Dominion later in the year. During her absence the school will be carried on by Miss E. Nicholson, B.A. (Oxon.) and a capable staff. Recently a party of friends paid a surprise visit to Mr and Mrs A. E. Shirley in their new home at Wallacetown. In welcoming Mr and Mrs Shirley to the district, Mr H. Townshend expressed the wish that they would enjoy improved health and would spend many happy years at Wallacetown. Both Mr and Mrs Shirley replied thanking their neighbours for their good wishes.

ISLA BANK TENNIS DANCE

FORTNIGHTLY FUNCTION The Isla Bank Tennis Club held another of its fortnightly dances on a recent evening, which proved very successful. Music was supplied by Mrs Townshend and Mr I. GORE Mrs A. Hain, Irk street, who has been visiting Otautau, where she was the guest of Mrs H. D. Gazzard, has returned home. Mr and Mrs F, Parsons, William street, have returned from a holiday at Queenstown. Mrs Melville Ross, Irk street, who has been visiting Waimate, has returned to Gore. Miss Molly Rogers and her brother Mr Rowland Rogers, Irk street, who have been visiting England and Australia, were expected to land at a North Island port yesterday. They will spend some time in Wellington before returning to Gore. Miss M. Galt, Main street, is the guest of Mr and Mrs A. Fisher, of Otautau. Mrs F. Wallis, sen., Crewe street, is visiting Timaru.
