MONEY FOR ROAD WORKS

Reconstruction And

Sealing

GRANTS SOUGHT BY COUNTY COUNCIL

Information that the Main Highways Board would probably be able to subsidize additional recoijiStruction and sealing works in Southland other than those placed on the estimates was received by the Southland County Council at its meeting yesterday. The engineer (Mr G. R. Milward) reported that the following works had been previously applied for:—

Highway Estimate ’ 33 Pukerau-Kaiwera, 20 chains 300 Winton-Gore, 1 mile 30 chains 2200 Rae’s Junction-McNab 4000 Lorne-Hedgehope 4500 Argyle-Tuatapere, 20 chains 500 In addition, added the engineer, the Woodlands-Morton Mains highway from the Invercargill-Dunedin State highway to Woodlands township, should be applied for; it was estimated to cost abo.ut £lOOO.

Authority to reapply to the Government for the works mentioned in order of urgency as set out was given to the engineer. Permission to sink a water bore on a by-road north of the InvercargillDunedin road near Woodlands township was granted to the Woodlands Dairy Factory Company, Limited. “The company has been considering the matter of obtaining a more adequate supply and better quality of water for its factory requirements,” wrote the secretary (Mr W. Carswell). “An underground stream Tin a by-road has been located and the company asks if the directors decide to sink a bore to obtain the water would the council grant it the right to do so on' the side of the road, .to put up a shelter for a pump and motor and the right to convey the water by piping along the road.”

Cr A. S. McNaught remarked that the company could not make butter because of the quality of the water. It was an important industry and he thought the council should give the necessary permission. Permission was granted under the usual conditions. GRASSMERE DRAINAGE A letter was received from the secretary of the Board of Health (Mr C J. Drake) about the insanitary condition of certain drains in Grassmere. The board investigated the matter, stated the letter, and decided to issue a requisition requiring the Southland County Council to install a public water supply and drainage for the suburbs of Grassmere, Collingwood and Waikiwi, bounded on the north by the West Plains road, to include in that drainage installation all streets which are closely built on, and to convey the drainage to the Waihopai river. It was decided to refer the matter to a sub-committee consisting of the member for the riding, the county clerk and the county engineer to report on the proposal. The engineer reported that the request for attention to the bridge over the Oreti river bn the Mt. NicholasMavora road had been acceeded to and the work carried out by the surfacing gang. TENDERS LET The following tenders were accepted: Waihopai riding.—Houston road (bush work), D. J. Thomas, £llO. Waihopai and Awarua ridings.— Woodlands South district roads, D. Swain and Sons, £456/6/3.
