FOREST HILL SCENIC BOARD
MANY IMPROVEMENTS MADE The public is now assured of a first-class picnic ground and the finest bush walks in the vicinity of Invercargill, says a report on the Forest Hill Scenic Board. In June the men began work on the reserve under Scheme No. 13. All tracks have now been completed and they wind through the native bush and have been constructed in such a way that a minimum of damage has been done to the bush. The main track leads from the gateway at the end of the gravel road to the top of the hill and is about a mile long. It circles back round the hill for about one mile and a-half. On the main track four magnificent views can be had of the outlying country. A subsidiary track leading off the main track has also been formed. Invercargill and all the southern parts of Southland can be seen from a point on this track, and a little further to the north on this track the whole of the Western District can be viewed. Notice boards have been prepared and will be erected soon. The motor-parking area had been completed and gravelled and if labour was made available, said Or W. Norman, of the Southland County Council in his report to the board, it was proposed to enlarge the area. Seats had been
constructed just inside the bush. A small dam had been built to hold the water.
The Invercargill City Council had given 500 trees and these had been planted on the north side of the bush, said Mr Norman’s report. The cattle on the reserve had been removed.
