FAIR WEATHER IN NOVEMBER

Sunshine On 28 Days RAINFALL BELOW THE AVERAGE A good average summer month describes the weather in Invercargill for November. The sun shone on 28 days, the rainfall was below the long-period average, and although in the earlier part of the month most of the days were dull and cold, the real warmth of summer was felt during the last week or 10 days. Only one or two rough and stormy periods marred the evenness of the weather. Altogether 188 hours of sunshine was recorded. That amount does not equal the 200 hours recorded in November of last year or the 197 hours recorded last month, but it was spread over the whole of the month, and on only two days was there no sun. The best bums were 13.3 hours on November 5, 11.6 on November 24, 11.3 on November 27 and 10.8 on November 6. The rainfall was not much below the long-period average of 4.71 inches—it was 4.48 inches—but there were few heavy falls. The heaviest was .97 inches on November 17. Rain fell on 19 days. During the last 10 days there was barely sufficient to water gardens, less than 20 points falling on five days. Light frosts were recorded on November 24 and 25. Neither was sufficient to cut vegetation in the city. Temperatures were cold in the early part of the month and warm during the last week. The maximum shade temperature was 79 degrees recorded on two days at the end of the month, and the highest solar heat was 133 degrees on November 30. Westerly winds again prevailed; there were, however, more northerlies and easterlies than usual. Following are the detailed returns supplied by Mr J. L. Lennie, Government weather recorder, taken from readings made at 9 a.m. each day:—
