KING GUSTAVO’S PROSPECTS

Passaform’s N.Z. Cup

Rider

INVERCARGILL TRACK WORK Acceptances for the Gore meeting close on Monday. To Ride Wardress L. J. Elils will ride Wardress at Washdyke on Saturday. For Gore G. Barclay will ride Peony Rose and Amelita the first day of the Gore meeting. Celerity II Celerity II (the dam of Boswell) is heavy in foal to Salmagundi and will be mated with him again. May Not Start Toro Koura has been named as an unlikely starter at Washdyke on Saturday. Withdrawn Majority was scratched on Friday at 9 a.m. for all engagements at the Auckland spring meeting. To Ride Passaform L. J. Ellis has been engaged to ride Passaform in the New Zealand Cup. As Passaform has 7.1 it will mean several pounds overweight. Has Prospects King Gustavo raced well enough in the Dunedin Guineas to suggest that he would be hard to beat in the hack sprint at the South Canterbury meeting. Fillies On Top

Fillies have so far had a remarkable run in two-year-old races this season. They have won them all bar the Hastings Stakes, in which Kindergarten beat Indore. Promising Jumper

An interesting entrant for hurdle events at the Wellington meeting is Lucullus Lad, who has already earned a reputation in private as a jumper. He is a type of horse to do well at this game.

The Limond filly Asia could not catch Winning Rival in the Dunedin Guineas, but she outstayed the rest of the field. Her dam, Jewel of Asia, also produced Sir John, Glenora Park and Coronation. Related To Pink Coat

Modem Way, winner of the Trial Stakes at Hastings,. is out of Either Way, a full-sister to Pink Coat. Modern Way is expected to run out middle distances before long. For Trentham

Riders engaged for Trentham on Thursday include the following:—W. Jenkins on Locrian, B. H. Morris on Coronado, H. M. G. Challinder on Lady Cygnus, W. J. Mudford on Gothic and Sheer Delight, and G. R. Tattersall on Acrobat and Baigowlah.

Death of Mr R. S. Sievier Mr R. S. Sievier, whose death is reported from London, started as a bookmaker in Australia. He was responsible for many a notable exploit during his career, but he will always be remembered as the owner of that great mare Sceptre, winner of the Two Thousand Guineas, One Thousand Guineas, Oaks and St. Leger in 1902. When financial affairs, caused Mr Sievier to sell Sceptre he founded the sporting and gossip paper The Winning Post, and one of his original remarks heading a column written by himself was “I possess no Sceptre, but I do possess a pen.” His colourful career as a sporting writer included an action for libel, and though on the crest of the wave one day and in the depths the next, he was never without a quip and a jest, and throughout his life he retained the regard of many influential friends. Invercargill Training

Training work was carried out under ideal conditions at Invercargill yesterday morning and several useful tasks by Gore candidates were carried out on the No. 1 grass which was in fast order. Mona’s Song pleased by a mile task and over the same ground Doubleack and Guste also showed up. Remembo recorded the best six of the morning. Remembo (Barclay) was going bettei than Sea Lady (Humphries) at the endof six furlongs in lmin 16 4-ssec, the last half in 52sec. Alms (Ellis) sprinted half a mile on her own in 52 4-ssec. It was quite a useful task as she has done little fast work. , Guste (Strathern) and Doubleack (Barclay) were together at the end of a mile in lmin 48sec, the last half in 53 4-ssec. It was a good gallop as they finished strongly. King’s Chorus (Low) and Blissful Lady (Barclay) narrowly beat Fairy Yama (Rowland) over five furlongs in lmin 6sec, the last half in 53sec. Royal Lancer (Ellis), My Song (Preston), Eire’s Ruin (Strathern) and the Songbird-Brightmark filly (Humphries) were taken to the barrier and from a standing start ran two furlongs in 24 l-ssec and three furlongs m 36 2-ssec. The Irish Lancer filly was the smartest to jump out and she soon opened, up a lead from the others, which were headed by My Song. Mona’s Song (Ellis) cantered down to the mile post and was joined by Wild Career (Humphries) at the six. Mona’s Song ran the first two in 26 3-ssec, the half in 51 3-ssec and the mile in lmin 46sec. They were together at the post, the last six taking lmin 19 2-ssec and the last half in 53 2-ssec. Mona’s Song is very well at present and Wild Career has also made good progress since being recommissioned.

N.Z. Cup Favourite Though four-year-olds have a good winning record in the New Zealand Cup Beaupartir will have to break fresh ground to succeed under Bst 131 b this year, as the winning weight-carry-ing record is held by Grand Rapids, which succeeded with Bst 51b in 1904. Handicapped at lib under weight-for-age, Beaupartir has not been set an easy task but he has proved to be a genuine horse, and with racing at Trentham to finish off his preparation should be a hard horse to beat. Never further back than fourth in twelve races last season, the Beau Pere-April Fool horse finished up third on the winning list to Defaulter and Round Up with £2890. Lord Cavendish, Good Passage, Disdain and Defaulter (New Zealand Derby) beat him in his first four races and then followed a win in the Queen’s Plate at Ellerslie and a fourth in the

them Derby) and Cheval de Volee (Taranaki Cup) shaded him in his next starts, but with Defaulter in Australia he finished up the season with four deserved successes—the New Zealand and Great Northern St. Legers, Awapuni Gold Cup and the Auckland Easter Handicap. Strong finishing runs have been characteristic of all Beaupartir’s races, and his record in the distance classics leaves little room for doubt regarding his ability to see out two miles solidly. Trained at Awapuni by Mrs A. W. McDonald, who has the distinction this year of also having Catalogue in the Melbourne Cup, Beaupartir was offered at the yearling sales by Mr T. H. Lowry, in whose colours he races, and bought in by Mrs Lowry for 800 guineas. By the successful Son-in-Law horse Beau Pere, Beaupartir is from April Fool, by Chief Ruler from Miss Cute, by Charles O’Malley from Canny. April Fool won a few hack races and Beaupartir is her first foal. Canny, fourth dam of Beaupartir, was a half-sister to Aboyeur, which was awarded the 1913 English Derby when Craganour was disqualified for interference. Recent reports are to the effect that Beaupartir is making excellent progress at Awapuni and his form at Trentham will arouse more than usual interest.
