SINKING OF AIRCRAFT CARRIER
FORMER SOUTHLANDER ESCAPES
A former Southlander, Charles Golightly, was one of the members of the crew saved when the aircraft carrier H.M.S. Courageous was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine. He left Invercargill about 18 months ago to join the Royal Air Force in England. In a letter to relations in Invercargill just before the outbreak of war, he said that he had been lent by the Air Force to the Navy and had been assigned to H.M.S. Courageous. Considerable anxiety was felt for his safety by his relations when the sinking of the Courageous was announced, but this has been dispelled by a cablegram sent by Mr Golightly stating that he' was safe.
Mr Golightly is a son of Mr F. Golightly, of Otapiri Gorge, and for a few years before he went to England he lived in Invercargill. He was employed at the Invercargill railway workshops.
