BURNSIDE STOCK SALE

LOWER PRICES FOR FAT CATTLE KEEN COMPETITION FOR PORKER PIGS (United Press Association) DUNEDIN, October 11. The yarding of fat cattle at the Burnside stock sale today totalled 300 head, compared with 196 a week ago. Although the quality was well up to standard, the market opened quietly and prices were back. Extra prime heavy bullocks made to £23/12/6, prime £l6/12/6 to £l9/2/6, medium £l2/17/6 to £l4/17/6 and light from £B/12/6. Extra prime cows and heifers made to £l7/17/6, prime £ll/17/6 to £l3/12/6, medium £9/2/6 to £lO/17/6, and light from £5/12/6.

A small entry of store cattle met a keen demand, an exceptionally fine line of four-year steers making £ll/5/-.

The offering of fat sheep numbered 1706, compared with 900 at the previous sale. Wethers were in over-supply, with several consignments of exceptional quality. The sale was slack from the start. Prices went back to the level of last month. Wethers made to 45/-, extra prime heavy to 43/3, prime heavy 35/6 to 37/9, medium 29/6 to 31/9 and light from 24/6. Extra prime heavy young ewes made to 37/3, prime 30/6 to 31/9, medium 24/9 to 27/6 and light from 20/-. , About 20 spring lambs made from 18/6 to 36/6. With a medium entry, fat pigs had keen competition in the porker class, although there was less eagerness in the market for baconers, which were down by 10/- a head. Baconers were worth 79/- to 98/-, and porkers made from 50/- to 75/-.

GOOD SALE FOR STORE SHEEP (United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, October 11. Values for the principal sections of fat stock at Addington today were much the same as last week. About 1000 store sheep were yarded and the sale all round was a good one. Medium and good hoggets sold from 14/9 to 28/6, ewes and lambs from 8/8 to 13/-, and two-tooth wethers to 23/9. Some excellent quality spring lambs were yarded and sold from lid to 13d per lb. I A total of 4500 fat sheep was penned. Good prices were realized for best wethers, but ewe values eased slightly on last week’s rates. Extra prime heavy wethers made to 51/10, prime heavy 42/- to 46/-, prime medium 36/- to 41/-, and light to 29/-. Extra prime heavy ewes made to 45/10, prime heavy 35/— to 38/-, prime medium 31/- to 34/-, and light from 20/- to 24/-. About 400 fat cattle were yarded and the market inclined to be erratic, showing a decline of about 15/- a head foi the great bulk of the entry. Extra prime heavy steers made from £2l to £25/7/6, prime heavy £l7/15/- to £2O, prime medium £l6/5/- to £lB and light to £l2/10/-. Extra prime heifers made to £2O/2/6, prime £l3 to £l5/5/-, medium £ll to £l2/5/-, light to £lO/10/-. Extra prime cows made to £l7/2/6, prime £ll/5/- to £l3/10/-, medium £9/15/-, and light to £9/10/-.

The entry of porkers was one of the smallest for some years and prices firmed further. Choppers were in fairly heavy supply and prices eased by 10/- to 15/- a head. Baconers were forward in medium numbers and the sale showed an easing on last week. Choppers made from £2/8/6 to £7/1/-; porkers £2/9/6 to £3/7/6, average price per lb 7Jd to 9d; baconers £3/5/6 to £5/14/6; average price per lb 6|d to 7Jd.

CLEARING SALE OF DAIRY COWS

KEEN COMPETITION AT MATAURA . The Southland Farmers’ Co-operative Association Limited, Gore, held a successful clearing sale of Ayrshire-Short-horn cross' dairy cows on account of Mr H. Cockburn on his farm at Mataura yesterday. Mr Cockburn has given up dairying and his complete herd was offered. The cows had been well wintered and were in splendid condition. There was a good attendance of farmers from all parts of Southland and competition was keen throughput. The complete herd * averaged £lO/5/6 and as high at £l5 was paid by purchasers. A number of milk cans was also offered and they sold up to £2/12/6.
