GAY PARADE IN FORM

USEFUL TRIALS AT RICCARTON KUROW CLUB MAY RACE AT OAMARU (Special to The Times) CHRISTCHURCH, October 10. A thick mist made conditions damp at Riccarton early this morning but did not interfere with training operations. The inside of the trial grass was open, but because of its hard condition, the plough, which had been watered over-, night, was in more demand. AR the grass tracks have become very dry of late and a good fall of rain would be appreciated. ON THE PLOUGH Great Flight finished in front of Scold at the end of half a mile in 51 4-ssec. Counterblast ran five furlongs smartly in lmin 3sec, the last four in 50 Kilrobe was well clear of St. Cloud after reeling off five furlongs in lmin 1 2-ssec, the last four in 49 l-ssec. The former has become very solid and should do well at the coming meetings. Boloyna, who will next appear at Trentham, was let off with half a mile in 52sec. Sovereign Lady and The Wrecker were companions over a mile in lmin 44 3-ssec, the first half in 51 2-ssec. The former finished four lengths in front. Racewell sprinted three furlongs in 37' 3-ssec, and Haughty Winner and Rabble completed a working gallop by running home three furlongs in 40sec. Nightdress and Captain Bruce ran seven furlongs in lmin 31sec. Captain Bruce, joined by Great Memory at six furlongs, covered a mile in lmin 46sec. Benevolent was well clear of Maroha after galloping seven furlongs well in lmin 30sec. This distance was later covered by Wine Card and Shanghai Lily in lmin 32 l-ssec. Sir Gladsome and Pink Lad ran half a mile in 51sec.

Ryetown shaped well in recording lmin 17sec for six furlongs, and Flame Queen and Muriet took lmin 18sec. Jan Ridd strode over seven furlongs in lmin 36 3-ssec, Nigella joining him over the last four, which were covered in 51 3-ssec. ' Roy Bun -and Skyrena reeled off half a mile in 49 3-ssec, finishing together. ON THE GRASS Wardress impressed by recording five furlongs in lmin 2 2-ssec, the last four in 50 l-ssec. Merry March and Bit o’ Blue were given a working gallop over seven furlongs in lmin 35sec. Dictate, Parquet and Studley Royal were associated in a seven-furlong task. They kept together for the first half-mile, covered in '5O, l-ssec, but the two first-named drew- away in the run home and Dictate finished strongly to beat Parquet by a length, with Studley Royal beaten off. The time for the full distance was lmin 28 l-ssec. Dictate’s work was very encouraging. . Rebel Lad went well alongside Wagner over a mile in lmin 44sec.

Gay Parade was responsible for another smart effort in covering four furlongs in 48 2-ssec, the first three in 35sec. He was then allowed to ease up, but still reached the five-furlong post in lmin 1 2-ssec. This greatly-improved gelding will be an interesting contestant at Trentham and Riccarton.

Mr F. T. Buchanan, the breeder and owner of Gay Parade, who is at present leased by him to his trainer. F. Christmas, had the misfortune recently to lose a colt foal by Nightmarch from Gay Sonnet, and thus a brother to Gay Parade. Gay Sonnet will not be mated again until next season. Mr D. McFarlane, of Christchurch, was also unfortunate with the first foal produced by Knockfin. The youngster, a well-growri eoltvby Paper Money, died a few days after being foaled. Knockfin is to be - again mated with the Greenback horse.

Defaulter arrived home today. There is every possibility of the Kurow Jockey Club’s annual race meeting arranged for December 2 being held on the Oamaru course. It is recognized that with the petrol restric-' tions and the cancellation of the one per cent rebate, together with the isolated position of the Hororata racecourse for railway communication,' the club would find it difficult to carry on with the fixture on its own course.
