NIGGER BOY’S FORM

Spendthrift Back In Work AUCTOR NEARING HIS BEST Acceptances for the Gore Club s meeting close on Monday. Named Anchorage is the name claimed for Fast Passage’s yearling colt by Winning Hit. Thermidor Thermidor was kept closer to her field than usual on Saturday but she finished, only a moderate sixth.

Not Improved Queen Dorothy was raced in blinkers in the* Ranfurly Handicap but it did not improve her behaviour at the barrier. v Costly Toro Koura and Strip were two costly bets at Wingatui on Saturday. Between them they cost punters over £l5OO. • Stud Item Trivet has foaled a colt to Ringmaster, the sire of Master Hotspur. Trivet was got by Paladin-Kerb, by Mark-hope-Fender, by Martian. Went Down Well No horse went down better in bis preliminary- in the McLean Stakes than the Sir Simper colt, Noko. In his race, however, he did not put much dash into his work'and was never a possibility. Poor Effort Prudent Prince did not go down well in his preliminary in the Dunedin Guineas and he raced accordingly. At the end of a furlong he was tailing the field and did not look like improving his position. Should Not Be Long Auctor carried the field in the Clarendon Handicap along at a fast clip for seven furlongs and it was not surprising that he faded out. The Balboa gelding looked particularly well and he should not be long in showing his best form. Named The three-year-old by Irish Lancer from Winsome Sister in F. W. Ellis’s stable will be known as Royal Lancer and a three-year-old filly by Irish Lancer from Morse Signal in R. E. McLellan’s .team will race as Ackemma. Defaulter’s Relation

Defaulter’s half-sister, by Foxlight, who was purchased at the National yearling sales at Trentham by Mr W. J. Smith, of New South Wales, for 500 guineas, has been named Kenthelda. Blazealong

Blazealong, who almost upset calculations in the Kaikorai Handicap, is a four-year-old mare by Paladin from Heraldry, the dam of Paper Dart, Blazon, Oliver, Vain and •• Newsreel. Heraldry was got by Clarenceux from Lady Holyrood, by Golden Knight.

The Melbourne Cup It forms a record in the history of the Melbourne Cup for a Dunedin owner to have two horses engaged in the race. Mr J. Richardson has both Royal Order and Aranui in the big race run at Flemington. Game Juvenile

Great Swoop proved himself a game three-year-old in winning the Kaikorai Handicap as he struck some trouble in the early running but he overcame this and finished on with a great burst to head Blazealong on the post. The Magnus colt is just the type to win over further than sprint journeys. Back Again

Spendthrift is back in work at Invercargill and he is carrying more condition than ever before. The Paper Money gelding has grown into a big upstanding four-year-old and evidently he has been well done by during the winter. A three-year-old filly by Colonel Cygnus from Stronglight by Tractor from Dazzling Light, has joined Mr W. Hazlett’s team. The Rebate The Minister of Finance has advised racing clubs which have entered protests that having in mind the present budgetary position, it is not possible to accede to the club’s request to have the one per cent, rebate of totalizator duty reinstated. Nigger Boy Nigger Boy did not stay on in the Dunedin Guineas as expected and the cold which he has been suffering from probably told on him. At the same time Nigger Boy had a hard race as he joined the pacemaker, King Gustavo, five furlongs from home and after he had beaten him off he had Winning Rival and then Asia to contend with. Returning to Form Sparkle shaped'like an early winner at Wingatui. The Colonel Cygnus mare looked like winning the Kaikorai Handicap halfway down the straight when she put in her claim and although Great Swoop and Blazealong headed her at the post she was far from disgraced. This was her first race for some time and she will be all the better for it. Bright Future Spearthrust, who was the first of Irish Lancer’s stock to win a race, put up a creditable showing in running second to Master Dingle over a mile. Spearthrust’s rider was without the use of a whip, which would have made all the difference to the big gelding in a close finish. He can be regarded as one of the most promising hacks about. A New Sire Kindergarten opened the imported stallion Kincardine’s account as a sire of winners when he easily defeated the hot-order Indore at Hastings. Very few of the Kincardines have yer raced, but evidence of their promise was given recently at the Foxton meeting by the three-year-old filly Kinkajou, who ran a very creditable fourth in the maiden event. Kincardine is a young horse by Gay Crusader (son of Bayardo), and he: is a half-brother to that good Australian racehorse and sire, Gothic. He came out from England with the reputation of having been beaten only twice in six races on the turf, winning all four times he started as a three-year-old, his successes including the Ascot St. James Palace Stakes and Jersey Stakes and the Newmarket Ormonde Stakes. He was imported by Mr W. Clarke, who

now has him at the stud at Gisborne. Kindergarten is a brown colt out of the Valkyrian-Adornment mare Valadore, the dam also of Native Song, who was successful three races later at Hastings on Thursday, and a half-sister to the recent winner Wings of Song. Both Kindergarten and Native Song are owned by their breeder, Mr E. Fitzgerald, of Gisborne. Will Do Better Sailing Lady was standing side on when the Ranfurly Handicap field was despatched and she lost several lengths at the start. She improved her position down the back straight and did well to finish right up behind the placed horses. The Lord Warden mare will be all the better for this race and she should be near her best at Gore this month. Phalanx In Form As a result of his good second to Lord Nuffield Phalanx will come into strong favour for the sprint events at Gore. The Nightmarch gelding had not raced for some months and after setting a fast pace he just failed to see out the journey. Since joining T. G. Pollock’s Gore team Phalanx has raced very consistently and should be a strong force among the sprinting talent in Southland this season.

A Stayer The recent racing she has had has improved Nightwings and her deadheat with Passaform was one of the best performances of her career. She was always within striking distances of the pacemakers and when she put in her claim in the run home she stuck to her task gamely in endeavouring to dispose of Passaform. Nightwings, who was got by the New Zealand and Melbourne Cup winner, Nightmarch, is out of Francolin, who is the dam of Dark Flight, Ortyx and Gold Flight, but unlike this trio Nightwings is a stayer and not a sprinter.
