WINTON

Mrs S. G. Clark, of Ryal Bush, spent the week-end with her parents, Mr and Mrs R. A. Norman, Forest Hill. Miss Mona Corcoran, Grange, street, left last week to take up a position in Invercargill. Mrs J. Clark, of Dunedin, spent a few days with Mrs J. B. Swale, “Ronaki,” Boggy Burn, last week. Miss M. McGrath, of Invercargill, was the week-end guest of Miss B. Swale, Mrs A. J. McCurdy, of Christchurch, is visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs J. R. Hamilton, McKenzie street. Before leaving for camp at Burnham, Mr E. Liddell, was met by the members of the Winton Presbyterian Church Choir, and was presented with a soldier’s leather holdall. In making the presentation, the choirmaster, Mr R. M. Gilmour, expressed the hope that Mr Liddell would soon return to take his place again in the choir. Mr Liddell replied. Those present at the opening of the St. Thomas’s Tennis Club which took place on Saturday afternoon included: Mesdames R. D. Pearce, J. Deegan, J. Molloy, A. Forde, Misses I. Murphy, M. Tilley, E. Pierce, K. Boyle, M. Corcoran, I. Deegan, J. Grimwood, Z. Deegan and E. Birss.

Miss Betty McDonald, of Invercargill, spent the week-end with Mr and Mrs R. T. Stewart, Park street. Mr and Mrs C. Milne, Great North road, were visitors to Lorneville for the week-end.

Mr and Mrs R. B. Wilson and their family were visitors to Fortrose last week.

OHAI Miss T. Sizemore, Invercargill, spent a few days as the guest of her parents, Mr and Mrs Sizemore, Ohai, recently. Mrs W. Morrison, Invercargill, who has been the guest of Mrs W. D. Morrison, Ohai, has returned home. Miss M. Macarthur, who has been the guest of her mother, Mrs M. J. A. Macarthur, recently, has returned to Invercargill. Nurse L. Johnston, Balclutha, was the recent guest of Mrs S. L. Gardnei. Mr A. Kennedy recently visited hin sister, Mrs S. L. Gardner for a few days. Miss A. Fraser, Invercargill, was the guest of Mrs H. Ferguson for the week-end.

Mrs M. A. Young, Dunedin, is the guest of Mrs T. Young, Ohai. Miss B. Ross, Invercargill, visited her mother, Mrs R. W. Ross, Ohai, last week-end.

Mrs Bentley was the recent guest of Mrs R. Bird, Ohai. Mrs R. Bird spent a few days at Riverton last week.

Mr and Mrs W. H. Jones spent the week-end at Winton.

POPULAR RESIDENTS BIDDEN FAREWELL

MR AND MRS C. MAWSON TO LEAVE OHAI

On a recent evening Mr and Mrs J. Paterson, “Springdale ” Ohai, entertained a number of people to bid'farewell to Mr and Mrs C. Mawson, who are leaving for Balclutha to take up business there. The evening was spent in games, competitions and community singing. The competitions were won by Mrs R. Mac Kay, Mrs W. Y. Bayne and C. Mawson.

Mr J. Paterson presented Mr and Mrs Mawson with a pair of decorative, bowls and a pair of candlesticks 'as a token of the esteem in which they were held by their friends. Mrs Bowman, on behalf of the Anglican Church, made reference to their guest’s fine work in church work. Mrs Bowman also referred to Mrs Mawson’s connection with the locai branch of the Women’s Institute Musical honours were accorded the guests. Mr and Mrs Mawson both thanked those present for their kindness. All present then adjourned to supper provided by Mrs J, Paterson. After supper Mrs Bird specially thanked Mr and Mrs Paterson for their hospitality. Those present included Mr and Mrs Mawson, Mr and Mrs W. Y. Bayne, Mi and Mrs R. Mac Kay, Mr and Mrs S. L. Gardner, Mr and Mrs J. S. Paterson, Mesdames Bowman, Bird, Bentley, Newton, Miss J. James, Messrs Kennedy (Balclutha), N. Bird and S. Paterson.'

SOCIAL EVENTS AT WAIRIO

MR AND MRS M. A. HUNT HONOURED

Before his departure from Wairio, Mr M. A. Hunt, clerk in the New Zealand Railways, who has been promoted to stationmaster at Waipiata, was met by the members of the staff. Mr C. H. Withers (station master) referred to the good qualities of their guest. Mr and Mrs Hunt had been valuable citizens and would be missed. He felt that it was only fitting that they should I make presentations as tangible signs of their appreciation. Mr Withers then presented Mr Hunt with an eversharp pencil, and Mrs Hunt with a salad bowl. Mr R. Donnelly (traffic manager to the Ohai Railway Board) also spoke, and his remarks were endorsed by Messrs M. Soper, W. E. Deady, P. Murphy, J. Watson, F. Forde, and R. Dougherty. Mr Hunt replied. Mr and Mrs Hunt were also met by members of the Wairio Tennis Club, | In asking them to accept a pair of vases, i the president (Mi J. B. Cutt), referred ' to their guests’ sterling qualities and thanked them for the great interest they had taken in the club. Mr H. Barnfield and Mrs C. H. Withers also spoke. Mr Hunt in a brief reply, said that they had enjoyed their association with the club and its members, and would hope to continue the sport in Waipiata.

GIFT AFTERNOON AT WYNDHAM

MRS F. J. SMART BIDDEN FAREWELL Mrs F. J. Smart who has sold her home in Raglan street, and is shortly leaving the district, was entertained by friends at a social afternoon at the home of Mrs D. Crawford on Friday. Two interesting competitions were won by Mrs Smart. Mrs Traynor, in presenting the guest of honour with a navy handbag, said they were all sorry she was leaving but wished her all success and happiness in her new home. Mrs Smart replied. WEDDING PRECEDED BY DANCE

MISS FRAME ENTERTAINED AT MIMIHAU On Thursday evening in the Mimihau Hall, the friends of Miss Maisie Frame and residents of the district entertained her at a gift evening in honour of her approaching marriage. There was an exceptionally large crowd present. Extras were played by Messrs Macfarlane and T. Skinner. Enjoyable j items were given by Misses L. Maguire, i G. Bain and V. Henderson (tap dances), i Mrs Skinner, Misses C. Traynor, M. Frame and Mr E. S. Macfarlane (songs). Messrs J. Young and R. McCaughan were masters of ceremonies. Monte Carlo waltzes were won by Mr Macfarlane and Miss V. Henderson, Mr W. Heaps and Mrs E. Frame, and a lucky spot by Miss Mcßae and partner. After supper, Mr J. Woods presented the guest of the evening with the gifts on view, and also expressed pleasure at the large crowd present, as it showed the popularity of Miss Frame. On behalf of friends present he wished her joy and happiness in her future life. Other speakers were Messrs J. C. Ronald, T. Skinner, J. Young, J. Dooley, and R. McCaughan. Mr D.
