The engagement is announced of Edgar Richard, youngest son of Mr and Mrs W. R. J. Smythe, Parnell, Auckland, to Dorothy Ellen, younger daughter of Mr and Mrs C. E. Watts, Layard street, Invercargill. Misses Margaret and Jean Chisholm, Otautau, will return to the country today after spending a week in town. Miss Betty Macdonald, Avenal, was the guest of Mrs R. T. Stewart, Winton, for the week-end. Mr and Mrs Morrell Macalister, Dalrymple street, were visitors to Te Anau at the week-end.

Mrs W. M. B. Veitch, Dunedin, will arrive on Friday to spend a holiday with her mother, Mrs F. Cowie, Dee street.

Mrs P. Linton Hodge, Gladstone terrace, and Mrs W. J. Barclay, Don street, will leave tomorrow to spend a holiday in Queenstown. Mrs P. W. Gresson, Albert street, will leave on Friday with her children for Timaru, where she will stay with her sister, Mrs Desmond Unwin. She will be accompanied by her mother, Mrs G. H. Cossins, who has been her guest. There were 14 tables of bridge at the Women’s Club on Monday evening, when the Bridge Circle held the final gathering for the season. At the conclusion of play Mrs L. C. Smith, the chairman, presented the prizes which had been won during the season.

DEMONSTRATION OF ACTIVITIES

“KEEP FIT” CLASSES TO BEGIN NEXT WEEK

To live a full and useful life, and to enjoy to the utmost the advantages of modern life offered in sporting, educational and social spheres must surely be the aim of everyone. Only those who are physically and mentally robust can obtain real enjoyment from work as well as recreation.

The enviable state of being healthy and efficient can be enjoyed by all women by joining the “Keep Fit” classes which will begin in Invercargill in the autumn. A demonstration of the “Keep Fit” exercises, games and

simple dances, besides lectures and discussions on recreative physical activities will be giten in the Victoria Concert Chamber of the Town Hall next week by the area recreation officer and it is hoped that as many persons as possible will attend.

The open classes are being held as follows:—

Monday, October 16: 2.30-3.30 p.m., women; 6.30-7.30 p.m., girls. Thursday, October 19: 2.30-3.30 p.m., women; 6.30-7.30 p.m., girls. Friday, October 20: 10.30-11.30 a.m., special class for older women up to 60 years of age. Women are asked to wear unrestricted clothing and rubber-soled shoes. After Labour Day, similar classes will also be held in other parts of the area, including Bluff, Winton and Riverton.

GOLDEN WEDDING CELEBRATED

MR AND MRS D. W. McKAY

Mr and Mrs D. W. McKay quietly celebrated their golden wedding at their home, Coldstream, Elies road, on Monday evening. Their marriage took place at the home of the bridegroom’s parents on October 9, 1889. Mrs McKay, as Miss Naomi Wilson, came from England at the age of 16 with'her uncle, Captain Whyborn, and was married three years later. The officiating minister was the Rev. J. Standring. Mr and Mrs McKay’s three daughters and two sons all live in Invercargill and they are Mrs A. E. H. Bath, Mrs A. E. W. McDonald and Miss E. McKay, Mr R. B. McKay and Mr D. J. McKay. Only members of the family were present at the celebration, but many* congratulatory messages were received from friends in New Zealand and Australia. On behalf of those present Mr A. E. H. Bath conveyed to Mr and Mrs McKay congratulations and best wishes for the future. Mr McKay replied.
