WINTON

VEGETABLE PLANTING SCHEME BOROUGH COUNCIL TO TAKE PART The Winton Borough Council is. to take part in the vegetable. planting scheme and a block of land is soon to be planted. This decision was made at the monthly meeting of the council when an offer of an area of good bush land, tilled and in readiness for planting, was received from Mr J. Mcßwrick. The offer was accepted with thanks. It was mentioned that men employed on Scheme 13 would carry out the work of planting. , There were present at the meeting, the Mayor (Mr T. Walker) and Crs N. Metzger, F. Tilley and T. N. Eastlake. Discussing Winton’s centennial memorial, the general secretary of the centennial branch of the Department of Internal Affairs, wrote stating that the requirements of the National Centennial Council were met admirably by the Winton Council’s proposal to rename the recreation ground “Centennial Park.” The letter mentioned that. in similar cases the name had been inscribed either on the entrance gates or cut into a granite or concrete block placed in a prominent position. The letter was received.

The Invercargill City Council advised that Winton’s portion of the heavy traffic fees for the six months ended September 30, 1939, was £149.. Cr Metzger reported that since the table tennis evening . held during recreation week, several players had approached him asking if it would be possible to have the use of the old Athenaeum building for this sport. The Mayor said that those who had taken part that evening appeared to be very keen on the sport. He was quite in favour of allowing them to use the rooms if a responsible person was in charge. He suggested that they be offered the use of the rooms for three months so as to encourage players to form a club. After that time the position could be reviewed. It would be one way for coming into line with the physical fitness movement, he added. The Mayor’s suggestion was adopted. RECREATION WEEK Badminton and miniature rifle shooting fixtures during Winton’s recreation week were well attended. The badminton held in the Radio Hall consisted of friendly games. At the Drill Hall, the miniature rifle shooting proved a big attraction and it was late in the evening before the final shots were fired. On the whole the shooting was of a good standard and a feature of the evening was the remarkably high scores secured by some of the women who were having their first experience with a rifle. PERSONAL The Rev. P. J. O’Neill who leaves soon on an extended trip to Australia, was bidden farewell by members of the congregation of St. Thomas’s Church at Winton. On behalf of the congregation, a presentation was made to Mr O’Neill by Mr J. Doherty, who referred to the guest’s activities in the district and wished him a safe voyage across the Tasman and a happy sojourn in Australia. Other speakers were, Messrs P. Kerr, J. Kean and W. Hill. A presentation was also made to Mr O’Neill by the children of the St. Thomas’s School. : The Rev. Father J. McKay, of Invercargill, will assume charge of the Winton parish during the absence of the Rev. P. J. O’Neill.
