RECRUITING AT SLOWER PACE

Fewer Enlistments Yesterday

MANY POSTAL FORMS EXPECTED TODAY

MORE SINGLE MEN NEEDED IN SOUTHLAND Recruiting for a special military force for service within New Zealand or overseas was continued at Invercargill at a slower rate yesterday and it was estimated that when the enrolment office closed at 9 o’clock last night 319 men between the ages of 21 and 35 years had enlisted in the No. 12 defence area during the two days The number of men enlisting was very small, there being only occasional arrivals at the Drill Hall, but a bigger number took advantage of the extended hours and there was a fairly steady stream of recruits in the evening. The first postal forms from the country districts were received yesterday and as a big number of forms have been posted out . in response to requests it is expected that there will be a good batch in today’s mail.

It was emphasized by the recruiting officers last night that the Southland quota was not yet full and there was still room for many more recruits. It was hoped to fill the quota without married men and many more single men could still be accepted. Recruiting officers had been advised to be prepared for up to 40 per cent, of rejections for medical and other reasons, but it was not expected that such a high percentage of the Southland recruits would be rejected. They were mostly of a very good type and appeared to be in excellent health. The medical examination of the recruits will begin at Invercargill today. Boards will sit during the morning, afternoon and evening and it is expected that at least 150 recruits will pass before the doctors during the day-. Country recruits will probably be assembled for examination at the beginning of next week.
