CABLE BREAKS IN COOK STRAIT
TELEPHONE SERVICE MAY
BE DELAYED
(United Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 15. The Postmaster-General (the Hon. F. Jones) advises that a four-core cable, part of the communication system between the North Island and the South Island across Cook Strait, has broken at a point estimated to be midway in Cook Strait. Mr Jones added that the department was in communication with Cable and Wireless Ltd. with a view to obtaining the services of a cable re - pair vessel. It is likely, however that some months will elapse before a vessel can be made available and repairs effected. In the meantime the complement of telegraphic channels between the two islands is not affected, but the number of toll circuits for inter-island telephone communication has been reduced from 10 to six. As a result it is probable that requests for inter-island telephone communication will be subject to delay.
