BIG GUIDE
“Do all the good you can by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can.” —Wesley. The new system of warrant testing is to be held over in the meantime. Until further notice, the test papers used will be those issued to provinces at the beginning of this year. Great Britain and Australia have definitely stated that they will be sending Guides to the centennial camp. Canada, United States and Sweden are hopeful. A canteen will be run for the sale of sweets, and so on, and personal requirements such as needles, tooth brushes, and so on. Dominion headquarters will also establish a shop for the sale of uniforms and equipment. There will be a department for the sale, development and printing of photographs. The post office will handle mail, stamps, telegrams and toll calls and run a daily newspaper. It will be possible to get laundry done near at hand. If the weather is fine the Rangers over-night hike for this year’s Bledisloe Cup competition will be held on Wednesday, January 24. It has been suggested that a plan be worked out for sending messages round the camp as near as possible in the old Maori style of passing on information. A test will be worked out for which Guides can train as official messengers. The qualifications will be surefootedness and the ability to repeat accurately the text of messages given them.
Have you ever thought how interesting it would be to correspond with Guides of other lands? Headquarters runs a post box department and frequently prints lists of hopeful overseas pen friends. This is an excellent way of forming international friendships. The list at present is: Queensland: A captain (21); guides 12 to 17 years. Victoria: A Guide (11); a Guide patrol. Canada: A sea Guide; a patrol; a lieutenant. England: A Lone Ranger; a Brown Owl, whose Brownies want to write; Rangers 18 to 25 years; and several Guides. Scotland: Guides 11 to 13 years. United States: Guides 14 to 16 years. Send a stamped and addressed envelope when applying for names and address your letters to the Post Box Department, Box 147, Hastings.
