WYNDHAM

MEETING OF TOWN BOARD At the monthly meeting of the Wyndham Town Board there were present: Crs L. Harper (chairman), A. A. Wilson, A. T. Heydon, C. G. Davey, J. Clarke and H. Hunter. . The chairman reported haying inspected the footpath in Cardigan road past the show grounds. He stated that he could not see that the board c °y do much to the path. The road, which was half under the control of the County Council, was used most, and could be patched up, and the property owners asked to clear the gorse from the road. This would make it safer for those concerned than using the footpath. Mr W. McDowell, chief traffic inspector, wrote asking if the board had further considered the proposed scheme of enforcement for Wyndham, Mataura, Gore and Tapanui, and, if so, what sum they were prepared to contribute towards the cost. The clerk said that at present the district inspector had a rather big district to patrol, but not big enough to support another inspector- If the towns referred to would agree to the Transport Department taking control of the traffic in their towns, the department would be able to put on another man, towards which they would have to pay a share of the salary concerned. It was decided to reply that the board was quite satisfied with the present arrangements. Advice was received from the Treasury Department that the board’s application for a £lOOO loan from the Main Highways Board for the reconstruction of the Mataura river bridge would be the subject of an Order-in-Council. The letter was received. E. F. Dray was granted permission to erect a shed on his property in Alma street. T. K. Clarke was granted permission to demolish a building on his property in Balaclava street. It was decided to make the usual grant of £5/5/- to the Southland Progress League. Cr Harper was appointed the board’s representative at the annual conference.

The chairman said the conference would give the board an opportunity of again discussing the question of the Mokoreta-Waikawa Valley road. He understood a road from Tahakopa was being formed to come out at the Mokoreta, and this would take in. portion of the road they were pushing to have reopened. Cr Hunter said the question of completing the Flamborough-Mokoreta road would prove of great advantage to the settlers and this could be brought up at the same time. It was decided that a remit embracing these' three roads be prepared for the conference. The Commissioner of Transport wrote referring to an accident which occurred on Menzies Ferry hill, the police report of which said it was caused by the depth of loose gravel on the road. It was decided to advise the commissioner that the road was controlled by the County Council. Cr Hunter said the Wyndham and Edendale Town Boards should combine in an effort to have the Wynd-ham-Edendale road tar-sealed. By so doing a great deal of expense in maintenance would be saved because of the heavy traffic on the road. It was decided to write to the Edendale Town Board on the matter. ESTIMATES FOR YEAR The estimates for the year were tabled, and in moving their adoption the chairman said they were on much the same lines as previously. Much more could be done if the arrears of rates totalling £3OO were paid, and he appealed to those concerned to assist the board in this matter. Cr Wilson gave notice of motion to move at the next meeting that the rates be as follows:—A general rate of 1/9; a special rate of 1/7; a bridge loan rate of 10/- per annum for weekly (refuse removal; £1 per annum for twoweekly sanitary service; 10/- per annum for flush downs; all to be subject to 10 per cent, rebate if paid before due date. The question of the fire-fighting scheme was again held over.
