SUMMARY OF YEAR'S

ACCOUNTS COMMITTEE’S SUBSTANTIAL CREDIT BALANCE The Waipiata Sanatorium Committee has a credit balance in the Bank of New Zealand of £2803/11/3, according to a report presented at a meeting of the committee in Dunedin by the treasurer (Mr T. Pryde). Mr Pryde submitted a summary of the committees income and expenditure accounts for the year ended March 31, 1939, which showed that the average daily number of occupied beds for the year was 134 and the average cost an occupied bed £l2O/8/-. . A representative of the Otago Electric Power Board discussed with the committee the question of obtaining electric current to supplement the committee’s present hydro-electric supply, and it was arrange’d that he would confer with the board and submit its proposals to the committee m writing for consideration at next meeting. The medical superintendent (Dr A. Kidd) reported that nine patients had been admitted in April, six discharged, while 136 remained on May 1, the majority of whom was doing well or improving. He reported on his visits to the different hospital centres since the previous meeting and recommended as suitable for treatment three patients from South Canterbury district, three from Waitaki, two from Vincent and seven from Southland.

He also forwarded a copy of a report he had submitted to the Department of Health about fire prevention at the sanatorium which was noted and approved. The secretary (Mr Pryde) reported that at the date of the meeting the associated boards had patients in the institution as follows: Southland 65, South Canterbury 23, Ashburton 10, Waitaki 11, South Otago 17, Vincent 5, Maniototo five—a total of 136. Since the previous meeting six patients from four hospital districts had been discharged. He also submitted a waiting list of 30. patients from four districts, the number having increased during the past two months because of the smaller number of patients discharged. Mr Pryde stated that copies of the committee’s estimates for the year 1939-40 had been forwarded to the associated boards, showing the amount each board would have to contribute towards the committee’s maintenance and capital expenditure requirements for the current year.
