Menzies Ferry beat High School by 28 goals to 20, both teams giving a fine display of basketball. The pace right up to the final whistle was exceptionally fast. Both teams knew they would be fairly evenly matched, and they set off at a pace that at first resulted in some misdirected passing and infringements; but after a few minutes this was rectified. It was hard to single out any special third; but as Menzies Ferry has

a strong defence, the honours must go to High School’s forwards, whose combination was excellent. _ Had their goaling been as accurate in the second half as in the first, the scores may have been reversed. EASTERN SOUTHLAND MATCHES The Eastern Southland basketball fixtures for tomorrow, with the names of umpires also given, are as follows: — A Grade.—High School B v. PUKEMAORI BEATS PA TUA Playing at Te Tua the Pukemaori team, beat the Pa Tua team by 5 goals to 4. As both teams were unbeaten much interest was taken in this match. The teams were:— PA TUA.—B. McKay (captain), N. Tecofsky, J. McPherson, E. F. McPherson, D. Dudfield, I. Knowler, A. Murphy, M. McKercher, G. Evans. PUKEMAORI—A. Whyte (captain), B. Raynor, G. Froude, I. King, M. Todd, M. McCoy, M. Riddell, J. Bums, J. Froude. The game was played in bad conditions, the court being practically covered with water, and rain fell during a greater part of the game. Pukemaori, however, was much superior in handling the wet ball and at half-time the team was leading by four goals to one. At the beginning of the second half the Pa Tua team played an improved game and scored three goals in quick succession. For Pukemaori I. King, A. Whyte, J. and G. Froude played outstanding games. MINIATURE RIFLE SHOOTING LADIES’ CLUB SCORES The Ladies Miniature Rifle Club held its weekly shoot last night. The attendance was good, but the shooting was not up to standard. Mrs J B. Doake won the McWilliams badge for the highest score off the rifle, 79.7. Mrs Young won the handicap trophy with 71. The club fired a match with the Limehills Club, winning by 661 to 604.
