National Military Reserve MORE THAN 600 CARDS HANDED OUT (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 24. Interest in the Government’s decision to form a New Zealand National Military Reserve continues to be maintained in Wellington and all today there was a steady demand for enrolment forms. During the two days that have elapsed since,the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) made a broadcast appeal, more than 600 enrolment cards have been handed out at the Chief Post Office and of these about 100 have already been filled in. At some suburban offices today the demand for forms was greater than on the previous day. One post office had a particularly busy day and the counter clerks were continually answering questions and supplying prospective applicants with enrolment forms. While by far the great majority of these forms were taken away, many others were filled in immediately by men who were anxious to join the reserve without delay. It is expected that the demand for forms will increase towards the end of the week, when many men who have not previously had an opportunity of enlisting will call for cards. MORE ENROLMENTS IN INVERCARGILL SERVICES OFFERED BY 25 YESTERDAY A total of 25 enrolments for the National Military Reserve was received at the Chief Post Office, Invercargill, yesterday, following the appeal made by the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) on Monday night. There have also been many applications for enrolments and, as a result of requests, 100 forms have been sent to various business firms. FOUR ENLISTMENTS AT GORE In response to the Prime Minister’s appeal for volunteers for the National Military Reserve, four enrolments have been received at the Gore Post Office. It is understood that none of the enlistments was for the territorial or permanent forces. OFFER BY AUCKLAND BUSINESS MEN GOVERNMENT PREPARED TO CONSIDER PROPOSALS (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 24. The Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) has replied to the president of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce (Mr A. Ely) as follows: “Thanks for your telegram. The Government will be glad to consider any alternative proposals which will safeguard the London funds and otherwise implement the Government’s policy.” 30 ENROLMENTS IN WANGANUI CLASSIFICATION NOT YET CARRIED OUT (United Press Association) WANGANUI, May 24. Thirty enrolments for national defence were received at the Chief Post Office in Wanganui. Classification of enrolments has not yet been made. There were five enrolments for army headquarters, mainly returned soldiers. RESPONSE TO APPEAL IN TARANAKI APPLICATIONS FROM 50 MEN

NEW PLYMOUTH, May 24. Fifty men in Taranaki have made application to be enrolled in the National Military Reserve at the various post offices and army offices throughout the province. One hundred and fifty to 200 enrolment forms have been given to applicants. Of these 23 have been completed at New Plymouth, 20 at Hawera and a few at other centres.

More than 100 trained nurses in the Auckland area have volunteered to play an important an ' specialized part in the scheme of civil defence as members of an auxiliary nursing service. The plan was officially launched tonight when at a meeting of registered nurses proposals were unanimously approved and a start made in the compilation of a register.
