COUNTIES ELECT NEW CHAIRMEN
ANNUAL MEETINGS 'OF COUNCILS The annual meetings of the four county councils in Southland were held yesterday, a new chairman being elected at each. Mr J. Dennis (Waikaia) was elected chairman of the Southland County Council and succeeds Mr G. W. Whittingham (Gore). ' Mr W. J. A. McGregor (Mount Linton) has succeeded Mr W B. Hopcroft (Gummies Bush) as chairman of the Wallace County Council. Mr D. Teviotdale (Isla Bank) was appointed chairman of the Finance Committee and Mr Hopcroft will represent the council on the District Highways Council. The Lake County Council elected Mr W. Gordon Its chairman. He succeeds Mr L. Lee, who has held the position for 12 years. Mr W. T. Widdowson is the new chairman of the Stewart Island County Council. Mr George M. Turner, who has held the office of chairman during the last two years, resigned from the council because of health reasons Mr P. E. Lewis also resigned during the last year. Mr George Swain and Mr Erick Leask were elected to fill the two vacancies. The council now consists of the following members: Messrs W. T. Widdowson (chairman), T. E. Jensen, M. Adamson, J. Phillips, G. A. Swain and J. E. Leask.
