NORTHEND CLUB REVIEW OF YEAR’S ACTIVITIES An improved financial position compared with the position of the club the previous year is shown in the review of the past season’s activities of the Northend Bowling Club, a report of which will be presented at the annual meeting of the club tonight. “The membership stands at 63 active, four honorary and two honorary life members, a total of 69 compared with 66 last year,” states the report. “As in other years the new members displayed a keen interest in the game and the welfare of the club in general. “Beginning the season with a debit of £3/14/11 the season closed with a credit balance of £23/9/5, an increase of £24/4/4 on the year’s working. Subscriptions amounted to £156 compared with £129/16/- last year. Receipts from the billiard room amounted to £24/8/6 as against £22/6/9 last season, an increase of £2/1/9. The total receipts were-£2ll/18/4 compared with £196/7/8 collected last year, an increase of £l4/9/8. Expenditure amounted to £lB4/14/- as against £259/18/10 the previous season, a decrease of £75/4/-. “The Labour Day tournament returned a net profit of £6/15/- and a progressive pairs tournament contributed twenty shillings towards the funds of the club. Donations amounted to £3/2/-. From these figures it will be seen that the finances have shown a marked improvement during the past year. CENTRE FIXTURES “Teams were entered in the four-rink championship and city rink competitions conducted by the Southland Bowling Centre on Tuesday evenings. Two sections also participated in the interclub competition on Saturday afternoons. Although not successful in these competitions many enjoyable games were played. Congratulations are extended to members of the successful clubs. “The club was represented in the centre championships by the following:—Champion singles: D. M. Scandrett. Champion pairs: L. H. Burgess and J. Ure (s). Shield rink: W. R. Leek, A. C. Millar, J. A. Wesney and D. M. Scandrett (s). Mayor’s pairs: W. R. Leek and A. V. Keast (s); T. Stocker and J. Ure (s). “The following members of the club were selected to play for Southland in the Harraway Shield fixture played at Dunedin:—A. V. Keast, J. Ure, H. Halligan, D. M. Scandrett and J. A. Wesney. CLUB COMPETITIONS “The club championships were conducted on the two-life system and appeared to give satisfaction to the majority of the members. Because of the unfavourable weather considerable delay was experienced. The handicap pairs were played on the one-life system. The following are the results: — Champion singles: D. M. Scandrett; runner-up: J. A. Wesney. Champion pairs: L. H. Burgess (1), J. Ure (s); runners-up: W. R. Leek (1), T. Stocker (s). Champion rink: W. R. Leek, A. C. Millar, J. A. Wesney, D. M. Scandrett (s); runners-up: T. Stocker, T. D. Pearce, W. Reid, G. Swift (s). Intermediate singles: J. Hannan; runner-up: W. Blaikie. Handicap pairs: J. Cockroft (1), S. C. K. Smith (s). “Excellent support was given by members to the Christmas, New Year, Easter and 'one day’ tournaments conducted in various parts of Otago and Southland. Two rinks from the club also took part in the New Zealand championship tournament at Auckland. Congratulations are extended to the rinks which were successful in tournament play as follows:—Bluff tournament: F. D. Farquhar, P. C. Thomas, L. H. Burgess, J. Ure (s). Hokonui tournament: W. J. McKitterick, W. Randle, -H. Halligan, J. Ure (sj. New Year rinks: J. McMullan, H. R. Morton, A. V. Keast, G. L. Swift (s), runners-up. Winton Central tournament: W. J. McKitterick, H. R. Morton, H. Halligan, J. Ure (s), runners-up. “The playing surface of the green was in good order in spite of the wet season, and showed the result of care and attention exercised during the past couple of seasons. “The social side of the club, which has been kept alive by a handful of enthusiastic members, contributed the sum of £24/8/6 towards the funds of the club. It is pleasing to see that this amount is somewhat in advance of that raised last year.”
