FREMONT MAY IMPROVE

SOUTHERN CHIEF AT FORBURY

FIELD FOR ALL-AGED

STAKES

The Canterbury Park Trotting Club will race at Addington on Saturday.

Spelling The three-year-old Brown Cloud is to spell for the remainder of the year. His form during the past season was good enough to suggest that he will win races in another year. Misbehaved Again

Coherto’s behaviour at Forbury was far from encouraging and it may take some time to induce him to act as solidly as he did as a three-year-old. He retains all his old speed but he is not prepared to carry it far. Southern Chic;

The Wrack gelding Southern Chief showed at Forbury Park that he has lost none of his brilliance and retains the stamina that he has always been noted for. He has only to settle down and begin properly in his races to win his way to good company.

Bingen Palm Back A recent addition to R. J. Humphrey’s Templeton stable is Bingen Palm, a pacer who has shown little dash lately. At his best he was good over most distances, and it will be interesting to observe whether he can stage a return to form.

All-Aged Stakes I The following nominations have been received for the Ashburton Trotting Club’s All-Aged Stakes, of £750 (one mile and a-half). —Ned Worthy, Rowi, U. Scott, Axspear, Special Edition, Ginger Jack, Loyal Rey, Van Derby, Horse Power, Sandusky, Nelson Eddy, Wainoni Girl, Colonel Grattan, Marsceres, Ferry Post, Marlene. Southern Smile Following the recent Forbury Park meeting, Southern Smile was returned to her owner, and she will, probably be given a spell before she is again put back in work. This mare was mated with Logan Derby some time ago without results. [ May Improve j The good-looking American stallion, J .Fremont, has not won the money expected of him after the brilliance he [showed in his early efforts, but like | other American pacers he may improve with years, states The Press, Christchurch. His recent efforts were not impressive, but it must not be forgotten that he has won three races this season, besides being placed several times. At the Timaru meeting in January he won his last race over a mile and a-quarter in Emin 46sec, and he defeated good pacers in Horse Power, Toorak, Lightning Lady, Red Pigeon, Red Ranger, and Icevus. He is engaged at Canterbury Park on Saturday, and a reproduction of his best form would find him a problem for the remainder in either the Winter Handicap, of one mile and a-half, or the Stewards’ Handicap, of a mile and a-quarter. A Noted Brood Mare Roy a McKinney, one of the most successful brood mares America has known, was destroyed early in April. Foaled in 1911, she was 28 years old. As a four-year-old she took a record of 2min 7-jsec for a mile, but she was then sold for 5000 dollars. Her subsequent form was not encouraging, and she was retired to the stud, where she proved very successful. She produced three that did 2min or better, four that did 2min ssec, six that uid 2min lOsec, while she is also the grand-dam of eight trotters and three pacers that registered standard times. Her most noted performers were Scotland, Imin 591 sec, and Rose Scott, lmin 59|sec, among the trotters, while her most successful pacers were Highland Scott, lmin 59tfsec, and Becky Becall, 2min 3|sec. Scotland is the sire of U. Scott, who is turn has left Highland Scott, at present the recognized champion two-year-old in New Zealand. In America, Scotland has carried on the excellence of his dam. and his star performer is Rosalind, who, according to an American writer, was “the greatest mare of the trotting world, figured from any angle.” She was the world’s best two and three-year-old trotter of her respective years and the world’s champion four-year-old filly. Last season she capped all her records by trotting a mile in lmin 56? sec.
