ASHBURTON CUP TODAY

Strong Support For

Dictate

NIGHTCALM’S SPRINT

CLAIMS

(Special to The Times) CHRISTCHURCH, May 12. The autumn meeting of the Ashburton County Racing Club, to be held on the Riccarton racecourse tomorrow because the club’s own grounds are not available, promises to attract a large assemblage of racegoers from all parts. The fields are all well filled and class is strongly represented, especially in the Ashburton Cup, while the hack events have attracted the best of this division at present in commission. The track is carrying a good sole of grass. The win-and-place system of betting will be in use. , , The Ashburton Cup has drawn a field that would do credit to any metropolitan programme. Wild Chase, who holds pride of place, has not won a race for some months but has been getting through impressive work. A softer track, however, would suit him. Haughty Winner and Rabble are two solid stable-mates and both should race well. The latter has gone up quickly in the weights and 8.10 may trouble him. Milford’s behaviour at the start of his races prejudices his chance always and he has to be taken on trust. •Everything right with him he will be a difficult proposition. Dictate’s turn to win a cup or a good handicap is due and no doubt he will ■ be one of the favourites. Foxlove shaped well at Washdyke last month. Thermidor and Roy Bun will be reserved for the Flying Handicap. Passaform’s chance will depend on the going which at present would not appear likely to suit him. Still he will not lack for support. Settlement will be given another opportunity to race up to track form. OPEN SPRINTERS The Flying Handicap field had been reduced to seven at acceptance but there is the right material engaged to ensure a close tussle. Paper Slipper has seldom run a bad race on his own track and in his last appearance at Easter won over six furlongs. Nightcalm will no doubt be prominent throughout and kept up to his work over the final stages should not be troubled in mastering the journey. Lady Leigh has been galloping well of late but on the plough and hard surface tomorrow may be against her. The following horses can be expected to race well:
