The complete steeplechase course of brush fences, patterned on the lines of those used at Flemington, will be in use at the Southland meeting today. There are eight fences in all and their erection is a credit to the club’s caretaker, Mr T. Marshall. Newcomers

Flame Queen, who scored a win and was twice second in her three races at Blenheim, like nearly all the stock of Seigfried, is improving with age. ' She is a half-sister to Iddo, their dam being the King Soult mare Belgian Queen. The Cardinal

The Cardinal, who ran third in the Champion Hack at Egmont, was bred at Orari, and is a three-year old by Night Raid from the Clarenceux mare Palestrina, who won the Oaks in 1921. The Cardinal is related to Rabble. Rabble’s dam, Jael, being a half-sister to Palestrina. A Mistake

A mistake was made in distributing the place pool in the Shorts Handicap at Hawera. A dead-heat for third was declared between Little Ruse and Dawn Star, and the totalizator staff paid out one-third to each of first and second and one-sixth, on each of the dead-heaters. That seems logical, but the Rules of Racing state:—“The amount of the place pool available for dividend computing purposes shall be divided into as many equal parts as there are horses placed in the divi-dend-bearing places and allotted accordingly, notwithstanding that by reason of any dead-heat, the number of such horses may exceed the number of such places.” This means that when there is a dead-heat for third, the pool must be distributed in four equal portions. Death of Mr W. Higgins The news of the death in London of Mr W. Higgins, though not unexpected, will be received with wide regret in racing circles. His courage and fortitude during his fatal illness, and since he received the verdict from the specialists, has been an inspiring example to all who knew him, states The Dominion, Wellington. In his own words, “If I have to die, I’ll die game.” And he did; none gamer. He just refused to give in till nature swept away his last reserves. It is pleasing to recall that in the last year of his life he had the happy experience of breeding and owning a horse of the best class in Eeaulivre, and that he was able to see him race and win, and above all at Trentham, and to receive the congratulations of his friends. He had raced horses for several years, and had winners like Lucius, Martial Dawn, Kilbronsyth, Callaghan, Joy Bird, Deficit, and Debham. Deficit won a Wanganui Guineas in a weak year, and it was not till the advent of Beaulivre that he had a top-class galloper equal to the best classic form. He imported Callaghan and Joy Bird from England, and also other horses, including his recent winner Royal Star II and he also raced horses in Australia. Another good horse to carry his colours this year was Globe Trotter, and it has been one of the most successful seasons he ever had. Mr Higgins was for several years a member of the Wellington Racing Club, and had been a steward since 1921. He took a very active interest in the welfare of the club and till his illness his special duty was always steward in charge of the birdcage. Death has this week struck a severe blow to the club as in addition to Mr Higgins the club also lost Mr Neil McLean.
