The Hon. F. Langstone, who leaves for Geneva on Monday to represent the Government at the International Labour Office Conference, and Mrs Langstone were guests of the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) and members of Cabinet _ and their wives at a farewell function held in the Prime Minister’s room. In-extend-ing their best wishes to the departing Minister his colleagues presented him with a pair of field glasses and Mrs Langstone with a pearl necklace. — Press Association.

Mr Arthur P. Harper, of Wellington, who spent yesterday in Invercargill, leaves by this morning’s express for the north.

The Hon. T. O’Byrne, M.L.C., returned to Invercargill by the express last night after spending a holiday in the North Island. He was accompanied by Mrs O’Byrne. Macalister Bros., ’ one of the oldest established legal firms in Invercargill, admitted into partnership Mr Hugh K. Carswell, LL.B. The founder of the firm, the late Mr John Macalister, began the practice of his profession in Invercargill more than 53 years ago, being joined a few years .later by his brother, the late Mr William Macalister. The present members of the firm are Mr H. J. Macalister, Crown Solicitor, and Mr S. M. Macalister, who both joined the partnership in 1912 and Mr A. B. Macalister who joined it in 1919. Mr H. O. Mackley, of Invercargill, has received an appointment as assistant stock inspector at Hamilton. Mr Mackley, who is a son of Mr O. O. Mackley, stock inspector at Invercargill, has been a student at Massey College for the past five years. Mr E. H. Diack, who has accepted a position as a senior master at the Napier Intermediate school will leave on Sunday for the north. Mr Diack is at present an assistant master at the North school. He was met by the head master (Mr J. A. Cushen) and the staff and the pupils at a farewell function yesterday. A presentation of a fountain pen was made by Mr Cushen and the pupils presented Mr Diack with a special drawing pencil and an inkstand. Mr Diack replied. ,

Mr W. F. Hames, deputy-registrar and assistant clerk of the Court, and secretary of the Southland Adjustment Commission, has received notice of his appointment as third clerk in the Magistrate’s Court, Christchurch. Mr Hames has been on - the Invercargill Court staff for the past six years and a-half. He will be succeeded by Mr T. M. Brydone, of the Supreme Court staff, Dunedin. The privilege of a special audience with the new Pope Pius XII, was conferred on the Rev. Father P. McKeefry, editor of the Catholic paper Zealandia, and private secretary to Bishop Liston, who left Nev Zealand shortly after Christmas, on March 24. Master Bruce Morgan, a pupil of the Southland Boys’ High School and a son of Mr E. J. Morgan, of Invercargill, will leave this morning for Wellington to join a party of 64 boys, sons of returned solders, who have been invited by the wives and children of members of the Returned Soldiers’ Association cf New South Wales to pay them a visit.; The party will leave Wellington by tie Awatea on Monday and will go into camp for a fortnight at Furlough House, Barrabeen. The boys will be in charge of Mr J. Robertson, of Dunedin."

Mr E. Gallagher, of the signals and electrical blanch of the Railways Department, Wellington, arrived in Invercargill by the express last night to inspect the newly-installed floodlighting system in the railway yards.

Dr E. S. iJamieson, son-in-law of Mr and Mrs W. M. Clare, New River Heads, has been successful in gaining a fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh.
