INCREASE IN NUMBER OF BIRTHS
VITAL STATISTICS FOR LAST THREE MONTHS
Eleven more babies were born in Invercargill during the quarter ending March 31, 1939, than during the same period in 1938, according to the vital statistics for these three months. The number of deaths decreased by three compared with the figure for the quarter last year, but there were eight more marriages. The figures for the quarter just ended and for the same period last year are: 1939 1938 Births 225 214 Deaths 103 106 Marriages 99 91 Compared with the same month of last year- there was an increase of eight in the number of births in March of this year. Increases are also recorded in deaths and marriages last month. The following are the figures for March of this year and for the same month in 1938:— 1939 1938 Births 73 65 Deaths 43 34 Marriages 40 31 MORE MARRIAGES IN DUNEDIN BIRTHS SHOW INCREASE (United Press Association) DUNEDIN, March 31. Figures for the month of March show I a considerable increase in the number of marriages celebrated and figures for the first quarter of 1939 show a rise in the number of births. • Other figures show only slight variations in the vital statistics. Following are the details showing a comparison with the corresponding period of last year:— For the month of March: 1939 1938 Births 11° 418 Deaths 74 76 Marriages 116 105 For the first quarter of the year: 1939 1938 Births 380 344 Deaths 218 230 Marriages 234 225 MARRIAGE LICENCES A RECORD HEAVY RETURNS OF DEATHS AND BIRTHS (United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, March 31. Marriages in Christchurch since January 1 constitute a record for this period. Licences issued totalled 461 against 347 last year. Probably deaths for March and the quarter are also a record except for November 1918, when the influenza epidemic caused 410 deaths in Christchurch. Deaths during the month ended today numbered 124 and the total for three months was 350. A large increase of births was also recorded.
