INCREASE IN NUMBER OF BIRTHS

VITAL STATISTICS FOR LAST THREE MONTHS

Eleven more babies were born in Invercargill during the quarter ending March 31, 1939, than during the same period in 1938, according to the vital statistics for these three months. The number of deaths decreased by three compared with the figure for the quarter last year, but there were eight more marriages. Marriages in Christchurch since January 1 constitute a record for this period. Licences issued totalled 461 against 347 last year. Probably deaths for March and the quarter are also a record except for November 1918, when the influenza epidemic caused 410 deaths in Christchurch. Deaths during the month ended today numbered 124 and the total for three months was 350. A large increase of births was also recorded.
