SCHOOLS’ SPORTS

Successful Meeting At Balfour 1000 ENTRIES RECEIVED The fifth annual sports meeting of the Northern District primary schools was held on the Balfour recreation grounds yesterday in ideal weather. More than 1000 entries were received and 13 .schools, Lumsden, Longridge North, Waipounamu, Balfour, Glenaray, Wendonside, Riversdale, Five Rivers, Garston, Athol, Wendon, Waikaia and Kingston, were represented. The sports, which were held under the auspices of the Balfour and Longridge Caledonian Society, were put through in an efficient manner and despite the big entries they were finished in good time. Mr D. Casey was president and he was assisted by an energetic committee and the teachers of the various schools represented.

The standard of athletics was outstanding for primary school children, some showing splendid promise. All events were keenly contested and there were some very close finishes. An important part of the sports was the solo skipping of the girls and the teams’ skipping. The judge of this section was extremely pleased with the high standard of the performances.

A big crowd attended the sports in the afternoon and it was kept well informed with the results of the various events by Mr E. W. Stevens who made good use of a loud-speaker. The winners of the junior and senior boys’ and girls’ championships will be announced next week and the successful competitors will be awarded handsome silver cups. Stanley Soper, of Waikaia, who won the boys’ Sheffield, won the cup for that event, and cups for the senior and junior teams’ skipping went to Lumsden and Wendon respectively.
