CUSTOMS DECREASE AT DUNEDIN SLIGHT FALL IN FIGURES FOR YEAR (United Press' Association) DUNEDIN. March 31. Taken generally there was a slight decrease in the Customs and other revenue collected in Dunedin and at the port of Otago during the past 12 months. Collections for the final quarter were down by about £12,000, chiefly because of a big decrease in the figures for the month. The beer figures show slight increases in both the monthly and quarterly returns and for the year the return is about £14,000 higher. The petrol tax figures showed slight increases and were about £lO,OOO up for the year. Tyre tax was about £5OO lower than the return for last year and wool tax for the month was slightly down and was down by about £2OO on the quarter. The yearly figure of £23,574, however, was about £5OO higher than the total for 1938.

Returns for the quarter, January to March, showed a decrease of about £12,000 on the figures for the corresponding period of last year. The figures for the quarter were:

Collections for the 12 month ended March 31 were down by about £17,000. The figures for the year were: 1938 1939

COLLECTIONS WELL MAINTAINED LITTLE EFFECT OF IMPORT RESTRICTIONS WELLINGTON, March 31. Customs revenue collections at Wellington continue at a high level despite the import control regulations which have now been in operation for nearly four months. The figures for the financial year ended today show a slight decrease in net Customs figures compared with the 1937-38 year, but under all other heads increases are registered. Last May the net Customs revenue at Wellington showed a sharp fall and this continued for the following six months until at the end of October there was a decrease of £242,520 for the seven months of the financial year compared with the corresponding period of the 1937-38 year. The November figures showed a sharp increase, then early in December the import control regulations were brought into force to cut down the heavy flow of imports. For the four months since then the net Customs revenue at Wellington has increased by £64,480. Sales tax too, which during the middle of 1938, was falling away, has during recent months shown a similar increase indicating an increase in internal trade. It is anticipated, however, that after about May the flow of imports will be very much checked and for several months from

then on Customs revenue will be at a greatly reduced level. The figures under all heads for 193839 and 1937-38' financial years afford the following comparison:— 1938-39 1937-38
